Agreed, this is off subject from FMA, but if we're gonna run a thread like this I'd like to share an opposing point of view. The public health system is the primary defense against contagious biological threats. I've got five health care professionals in my family, so discussions like this get kicked around at family reunions. From what I'm hearing the U.S. health care system isn't well prepared at this point. Michael Tippie, who holds advanced degrees in biochemistry and genetics from M.I.T., the University of Washington and Stanford, is a senior scientist specializing in anti-viral therapeutic research at LifeSpan Inc. He sent me an E-mail today with the following: _______________________________________________________________ A smallpox epidemic is the nightmare scenario of bio-terror right now, and I think you can see from the articles below that this possibility is not only the province of science fiction or the ravings of paranoid survivalists now, and that the U.S. is woefully unprepared to respond to this sort of attack. Without an adequate stock of vaccine, the only defense is quarantine, and the U.S. stock at 6-7 million doses is pathetic--it took Yugoslavia 18 million doses to quell an epidemic started with one man with a fever in 1972. And that was in a population that was not immunologically naive as we are now, in a country of 25 million people, not 285 million, and in a country under authoritarian communist rule where military imposition of a ban on travel was not difficult. In the absence of sufficient vaccine, quarantine of any individual suspected of infection is the only defense against smallpox. Industry articles: http://jama.ama-assn.org/issues/v281n22/ffull/jst90000.html http://cryptome.org/smallpox-wmd.htm This is beginning to be reported in the popular press, as well: http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/wolf.blitzer.reports/ http://www.msnbc.com/news/640882.asp http://www.msnbc.com/news/242194.asp?0cb=-11330726 The United States Congress urgently needs to approve the financing of smallpox vaccine production. We could be free of this threat in short order if the government would focus on smallpox--anthrax is like a Christmas present compared to smallpox. Michael _______________________________________________________________ Neither scare-mongering nor ill-informed under-assessments of the threats we face are what is needed right now. What is needed is an alert, pro-active security and public health policy. In this case, I echo my brother's recommendation to write to your congressman and urge them to expedite the approval of financing for increased smallpox vaccine production. Comments? Ray +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ "The general concept around gatka is the use and development of natural human instincts and methods of movement, and then developing these to such a level that the individual can be taught to fight efficiently. Generally, if you ask a man to swing a club at a post and tell him nothing else, he will whack it quite successfully. Yet you didn't tell him how to stand, what his starting position ought to be, how to hold the club, which muscles to tense, etc. What gatka does is take this man's movements and develop them in him in order that he can strike the post in a steady 1-2 rhythm, using whichever hand he's holding the weapon in. Once that is achieved, then it has him speed up, to "tighten" his movements, etc. Finally, it matches him against an opponent, where he learns to use his natural instincts to attack, retreat, and react, all without hesitation. That is the whole idea around gatka. It starts naturally, and it builds up a person's natural instincts and reactions so that they are optimised for the realities of combat. This is in contrast to some other martial arts, which teach artificial (combat optimised) movements from the outset, and then make the practitioner so good at these unnatural movements that eventually he or she can use them "naturally" in a real fight." ------------------------------ From: "jose saguisabal" Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2001 17:23:41 -0700 Subject: eskrima: FMA/Open Tournament in Sacramento, CA Just like to mention that Guro Gatdula is throwing an FMA/Open tournament in Sacramento on November 11, 2001. Lujan" Date: Wed, 17 Oct 2001 16:30:11 +0800 Subject: eskrima: World Kali Festival We are pleased to inform all of you that next month, Iloilo will be host to an international gathering of kali players during the holding of the World Kali Festival and Grand Championship. This will be the first time that such activity will be held in the Philippines. Similar activities have been held previously in the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany. Kali, popularly known by its modern name arnis de mano, is a martial art of the Philippines and is now considered the second most popular martial art in the United States, next to taekwondo. Unfortunately, the popularity of kali in the Philippines has waned. It has been taken over by taekwondo and wushu, both foreign martial arts of Korean and Chinese origin, respectively. Ironically, the Philippine Sports Commission has even allocated P4 million each for the development of judo, karate, taekwondo and wushu in the country but not a single cent is given to the propagation of kali, a truly Filipino martial art. The World Kali Festival aims to revive the popularity of kali and inculcate among Filipinos the love for it, not only as a sport or a form of martial art but as a part of Philippine heritage. It may also become a cultural and tourist attraction once developed as a community sport. Scheduled on November 9-18, 2001, the festival will gather at least 50 kali experts and practitioners from all over the world in Panay Island where the roots of the Filipino martial art was traced. Kali gurus in the mountains of the island will be invited to interact with foreigners who have come to love the homegrown art. The schedule of activities is as follows: November 9 - Opening of exhibit of kali weapons and pictures. There will also be a book sale and a video presentation. Proposed venue is the SM City Megamall in Mandurriao, Iloilo City. The exhibit ends November 16. November 10 - Opening of the kali training camp in Bantayan Beach Resort in Guimbal, Iloilo. A traveling team will go to selected towns to demonstrate various kali techniques. The training camp ends November 16. November 17 - Opening of the World Kali Tournament at the Iloilo Sports Complex's Covered Gym in Lapaz, Iloilo City. November 17 - Hosting of the Kali Cultural Show and Martial Arts Ballet presentation at the West Visayas State University Cultural Center in Lapaz, Iloilo City. November 18 - Championship bouts, awarding ceremonies and closing program will be held at the Iloilo Sports Complex's Covered Gym in Lapaz, Iloilo City. Project Organizers: 1. Pekiti-Tirsia Global Organization The Pekiti-Tirsia Global Organization is a kali or a Filipino martial arts school based in New York, USA. It was opened in 1972 by Leo Tortal Gaje Jr. to propagate the pekiti-tirsia system of kali. It has now at least 60 affiliates worldwide, particularly in the United States, Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom, Germany, Russia, Denmark, Belgium, Italy, New Zealand, Brazil, Japan, Malaysia, India, Taiwan and South Africa. Gaje is credited for having pioneered the teaching of kali in the East Coast and for having introduced real contact stickfighting across the United States. In 1987, he was listed in the Martial Arts Hall of Fame and in 1988, he was listed in the Karate Hall of Fame, a special achievement since he is not a karate practitioner. Gaje is a certified trainor in steel baton of the US Criminal Justice System Training Association and of the United States Police Defensive Tactics Training Association. He is internationally well known for his work as technical advisor (and his personal appearance) in the Police Training Video "Surviving Edged Weapons", which has been classified in reviews as "the finest law enforcement training video ever made". 2. Lujan and Associates The Lujan and Associates is a partnership based in Iloilo City and is registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission. It is engaged in the business of event management, civic journalism and information technology. Organized in February 2000 and often mistaken either as a public relations company or an advertising agency, it aims to highlight various social and cultural issues through special projects, mass communication tools and the Internet. It has been assisting local government units and foundations in reaching out to the public, in a manner that is free of any political leanings and business interests, by making people understand the real functions of LGUs and of civil society.
