Fuller or no fuller, once you've stuck a blade into something, there is still work to be done: you can do about as much damage on the way out as on the way in, and if you're targeting something specific like the sub clavial you can increase your likelihood of catching it. Bottom line is I think discussions of what knife design is easiest to pull out of a target are not as useful as discussions of how to keep doing damage on the way out. >> I'm a big advocate of twisting and then cutting my way out in a new direction. This in fact, will destroy any suction you might encounter by widening the wound and inflicting more damage on the way out than you caused in the way in. You can often spot the person who really knows how to use a blade as opposed to someone who is just trained in a form - especially a competition form, where holding the blade where the judges can see it. I have seen wushu forms where the person would be trying to pull the blade out of a body sideways via the flat of the blade rather than the edge. You can also spot someone who is not familar with real blade use by the tendency to kill horses instead of people. They use a vertical thrust to the chest rather than a horizontal one. Say homie...what way do human ribs go? If you don't factor it in you run a very good chance of your blade bouncing off a rib. These two subtle points are often a great source of entertainment for me when someone claims to know knife fighting. Also having more than a few sword smiths in my circle of friends, most of them are in the "gutter is primarily structural" camp. And blades with gutters really are lighter. ------------------------------ From: "johnaleen" Date: Thu, 25 Oct 2001 12:22:46 -0400 Subject: eskrima: Re: " Espada Ya Daga" Seminar Report Espada Ya Daga Seminar: Sifu Ken Andes and his assistant instructor Don Pentz came down from Rutgers University in northern New Jersey. Ian Carroll Traveled from California to play traditional drum music consistently, and very skillfully, throughout the five-hour seminar. This gave the seminar a very traditional flare to it. I would like to personally thank all three of these honored gentlemen for their help and skills, volunteering their time and their personal expenses to help make it happen.
