Forwarded message: Historic Gurkha Battle Commemorated Updated: Fri, Oct 26 8:06 AM EDT By ED JOHNSON, Associated Press Writer LONDON (AP) - The courage and loyalty of Gurkha soldiers has been commemorated in a new painting that captures a defining moment in the regiment's history. The 7-foot-long canvas depicts the bloody battle of Delhi Ridge in 1857 in which the Nepalese fighters first displayed their fierce loyalty to the British Crown. Massively outnumbered and bombarded by artillery fire, a regiment of Gurkhas refused to desert its post and fought alongside British troops, helping to crush the Indian Mutiny. Their bravery and loyalty so impressed Queen Victoria that seven extra Gurkha regiments were created in the British Army and ever since their name has been synonymous with courage and grit. "This picture is so important because it portrays the defining moment where the Gurkhas routed the Indian mutineers by standing fast with the British soldiers," said Lt. Col. Craig Lawrence of the Royal Gurkha Rifles Thursday. "It marks the beginning of the friendship between the British troops and the Nepalese that has lasted to this day." The Gurkhas were first recruited by the British in 1815. They had been defeated by troops from Britain's East India Company during the Anglo-Nepal war, but their bravery in battle greatly impressed British officers and they were offered service. In 1857, Indian troops mutinied against their colonial masters following rumors that bullets for a new rifle were coated with animal fat. To prime the bullets, the tip had to be bitten off. Reports that the tips were sealed with cow fat enraged Hindu conscripts who held the cow sacred. Similarly, Muslim soldiers took up arms against the British, fearing the bullets were coated with pig fat, deemed unclean to followers of Islam. More than 180,000 mutineers established their headquarters in Delhi. Yet the 2nd Gurkha Regiment, together with Britain's 60th Rifles and a loyal Indian regiment, managed to hold on to strategic high ground above the city until reinforcements arrived. Their loyalty was recognized by Queen Victoria, who awarded the regiment an ornate truncheon decorated with scenes from the battle. The battle - which has become a defining moment in Gurkha history - was painted by South African artist Jason Askew, 34, who spent weeks studying diary accounts of the battle to make the scenes as authentic as possible. "This battle was very significant, as it is where the mutual trust between the Gurkhas and the British Army started," Askew said. "It is important to commemorate it." He said it had not yet been decided where the painting would hang. Gurkhas fought alongside the British in both world wars, as well as in Cyprus, the former Malaya and the Falklands. They were also deployed in the Gulf War, Bosnia, Kosovo and East Timor. Nearly 30,000 Gurkhas from Nepal have served in the British army in the past, and 3,000 are still on active duty.
