There are time that a verticle thrust is very appropriate. > You can also spot someone who is not familar with real blade use by the > tendency to kill horses instead of people. You said it in your post....but I think that people oversimplify and just say that you should use a horizontal thrust rather than a vertical one. The comment is well received, but I think that the key is hidden in the post. BTW, a vertical or horizontal or horizontal thrust will work on a horse's chest....think horse ribs........ We in the UK have had quite a few pictures in the press of them practicing (usually with Khukri's drawn) for the battles ahead. Animal, I rarely disagree with you. Please educate me if I am wrong. A stuck body has this knee jerk reaction of victim jerking away from the blade thus breaking suction. The victim will not pose for a picture so you can twist. Additionally, blades have curved hooky things at their base (choils), wave features ala Emerson, thumb studs, guards, and quillons any of which can hang up on cloths if you twist on the way out. It is critical to keep your edge both figuratively and in reality so that you do not end up in an unarmed knife defence situation. Furthermore, it is more likely that 1) both will end up cut thus causing 2)more likelyhood of being able to slash or double pump thrust a blade at best. The "picture posing" victim and agressor having time to pick his spot, execute, and then inflict even more damage is unlikely. I think he would be lucky to 1) not get cut and 2) cut the other guy and end it "alive." I for one do not want to test this theory. > You can also spot someone who is not familar with real blade use by the > tendency to kill horses instead of people. If > you don't factor it in you run a very good chance of your blade bouncing off > a rib. This I can agree with "but" also you can use the blade perpendicular to the rib to maintain space, cause pain, demoralize and counterattack or attack in "your" rhythum as in progressive indirect attack vs. a single angular attack where success relies on you being quicker than him or you having a better command of the "stop hit". One of the reasons for the FMA defang concept is the level of safety it affords. PIA follows that line of thinking. It is the BJJ equivilent of "Position before Submission". Recurring dogma I keep as "unchanging Concepts" Regards, Carlton H. Fung, D.D.S. Redondo Beach Ca.
