What criteria do you use to say which is and which isn't. Doug. ------------------------------ From: AnimalMac@aol.com Date: Sat, 27 Oct 2001 16:59:22 EDT Subject: eskrima: Re: knife suction From Marc A MacYoung Doc said I rarely disagree with you. Please educate me if I am wrong. A stuck body has this knee jerk reaction of victim jerking away from the blade thus breaking suction. The victim will not pose for a picture so you can twist. It kind of depends on what he is doing when the blade enters. If he is charging odds are he will still keep on going the direction he was going when stuck. If you are dragging him towards you, well, then he will continue being dragged towards you. >Additionally, blades have curved hooky things at their base (choils), wave features ala Emerson, thumb studs, guards, and quillons any of which can hang up on cloths if you twist on the way out. Oh don't even get me started on the fad of putting cholis on "fighting knives" That was a knife maker fantasy from the mid eighties that pissed me off to no end. On a knife that is a tool, a cholis is a functional design because it allows the user to get a better grip on the knife for difficult cuts (whether skinning, whittling or whatever). However, as I pointed out in my knife video - now nearly 10 years ago - it will hang up if you have put the blade all the way in, not on clothes, but the skin itself. As for clothes in the quillions, it depends on how you were taught to use your body. If you are just using your arm, then yes you do run the chance of it binding in the person's clothes. However, if you were taught to use your body to power your moves the combination of the edge (and no cholis) and your bodyweight behind the cut usually will result in the clothes tearing/being cut instead of tangling. >Furthermore, it is more likely that 1) both will end up cut thus causing 2)more likelyhood of being able to slash or double pump thrust a blade at best. As you cut your way out you are also chambering for another pump >This I can agree with "but" also you can use the blade perpendicular to the rib to maintain space, cause pain, demoralize and counterattack or attack in "your" rhythum as in progressive indirect attack vs. a single angular attack where success relies on you being quicker than him or you having a better command of the "stop hit". Here is where I have a problem with that idea...first off I have planted the tips of blades in people as a "you don't want to be here" message. Thing is, like a car antenna across the thigh, it is a first strike move...one that you use while the guy is still thinking about attacking -- to convince him that it is in his best interests to withdraw instead of fighting. You don't do it while the guy is actually attacking because he might be so wrapped up in the attack that it won't physically stop him. He'll realize that he was hurt after he has used your ass as a mop. Stop hits are impact oriented. By the time the guy gets into position for it to become a stop hit, you will have driven the knife through his chest and into his shoulder blade. > One of the reasons for the FMA defang concept is the level of safety it affords. PIA follows that line of thinking. It is the BJJ equivilent of "Position before Submission". Recurring dogma I keep as "unchanging Concepts" I do however use that blade position to flick it tip upright and let the guy peel his own arm as he is thrusting, while using enough of a shove to deflect his blade. ------------------------------ From: abanico-video-knuettel@t-online.de (Dieter =?iso-8859-1?Q?Kn=FCttel?=) Date: Sun, 28 Oct 2001 08:42:51 +0100 Subject: eskrima: Re: Master Edgar Canete Hi, I want to express my conodlences to the Doce Pares group for the loss of Master Edgar Canete. Due to the loss of Professor Remy Presas and Suro Mike Inay I know how it feels and it is a hard time, but you will come over it and you will keep him in your hearts. For the members of the digest: For everybody is wondering hat happened to Master Edgar Canete, this is what I found on the Doce Pares homepage http://www.docepares.com Regards from Germany Dieter ANNOUNCEMENT TO ALL MARTIAL ARTISTS, AND TO FRIENDS OF DOCE PARES AND THE CANETE FAMILY In Memoriam Master Edgar Canete On Saturday, October 20, 2001, Master Edgar Canete died in Cebu at the young age of 47. Edgar was the fifth child of Grandmaster Cacoy Canete and Hermenia Canete. He succumbed to a sudden and terrible cancer detected only two months ago. Edgar was a friend to hundreds of Eskrimadores and other martial artists who visited the Doce Pares Headquarters in Cebu. His skill in arnis was well-known as were his hospitality to me and to so many others. I am sure many Eskrimadores will remember fiestas at C.Padilla St. where Edgar prepared his cooking specialty - dugo dugo to "enlighten" foreign visitors to Philippine cooking! Edgar was a wonderful father and husband as well. I'm sure many visitors remember his son Chuck and Gloria his wife whom he loved so much. Edgar's final days were very hard. But his courage, family and faith supported him till his last breath. Edgar lived a life to be proud of. He didn't accumulate material wealth but he accumulated friends and people who loved and respected him. When his life is finally judged, we can be sure that Jesus will record in the Book of Life, "Well done, good and faithful servant, Edgar Canete." Friends who wish to communicate condolences to Edgar's family or to his father, GM Cacoy, can do so via email to docepares@docepares.com. Messages may also be left on the Doce Pares Martial Arts Message Board Any Doce Pares members, Eskrimadores or martial artists wishing to make a financial contribution to help Edgar's family and the Canete clan can do so through Doce Pares. Please email docepares@docepares.com. for information on this.
