We in the UK have had quite a >few pictures in the press of them practicing (usually with Khukri's drawn) >for the battles ahead. Saw news clips of them doing what seemed to be a form, getting ready to go in. Also saw a news clip of Indonesian mujahadeen practicing a blade form. These guys are part of a group who are Waiting to "escort" american and british nationals out of the country. Some are going into Afghanistan to fight for the Taliban. A confrontation between the two would be interesting. ------------------------------ From: Eagle556@aol.com Date: Mon, 29 Oct 2001 10:32:39 EST Subject: eskrima: Knife Laws I recently came across an article, dated Tuesday August 7, 2001, from the Irish Independent Online paper which was describing the perceived need for stronger knife laws. The article said in part: "The Dail's Health and Children Committee chairman, Batt O'Keefe (FF), claimed that while Irish gun-controls are among the best in the world, there is an alarming disparity of control for weapons such as knives and swords." "Concern has mounted over recent months at the spiral in violent crime with a retiring Cork Circuit Court Judge AG Murphy expressing anxiety that society was in grave danger of being overwhelmed by such crime." "The Cork TD said that it was imperative for a National Register of such weapons to be compiled and for strict licensing of knives capable of inflicting serious harm." At the end of the article there was the following statement, "A similar campaign called 'Bin(sp?) the Blade' proved a huge success in Britain and I believe we can achieve comparable results," the TD said. I have not been able to find much information on the proposed Irish laws or the British version. The latest knife law that I could find from Britain is from 1996 (My thanks to the Edge2 website for the 1996 version). I have a few questions for anyone that lives in Britain or Ireland. Is there a more current copy of Britain's knife laws available? Is there a copy available of the proposed Irish laws? Has there been any more action on the proposed Irish laws? Do you feel that these laws will or have affected you as a FMA? Has there been a substantial increase in bladed weapon crimes? Are you being overwhelmed by such crime? Take care, Robin J.
