The school guard spoke no english and really didn't want me around but I smiled and nodded a lot and he let me in. The head instructor spoke perfect English and told me much about the school. From his perspective it is the Filipino version of Muay Thai, only better (of course...) These guys trained on a hanging bag made of a four inch by four inch piece of wood six feet long, stuck into an empty hanging bag, and then they filled it in with broken floor linoleum pieces. No, I am NOT kidding. They asked me to kick the bag which I did with much bravado and a few "ish" noises and the entire school broke into laughter. Loud laughter in Visayan means : "You suck, but we like your style". What has stuck with me ever since was the fact that the head instructor had his school's logo on his bicep. It was a fairly complex logo, about 2 inches in diameter, and was not tatooed, but carved into his arm with a knife so the raised scar tissue formed the outlines of the logo. This was one very tough hombre and polite as could be. I'm a Yaw-Yan man now myself... Everything you said applies in spades. Remember that I am talking about over twenty five years ago. Back then the antennas were hollow little rods made of cheap flimsy metal. We'd rock 'em back and forth a few times to establish a crack at the base and then roll them in a flat circular motion parallel to the hood to stress the metal enough to break. The whole process would take between 30 seconds to a minute before the metal fatigued enough to break. And even then sometimes it didn't work. It was never a just grab and rip it off move. Or at least it never was with me. ------------------------------ From: mccfamily@plexis.net (Dan McConnell) Date: Wed, 31 Oct 2001 10:46:36 -0500 Subject: eskrima: Knife laws in Ireland I live in Ohio, but I'm Irish. One of fthe blades that I carry on duty is cold steels el hombre. An officer saw me using it and commented on it. We got into a conversation with regards to knife laws and his response was that whether it was a huge knife or a toothpick, if one is menacing with it, you'll have trouble w/ the police. By the way, he was carrying an automatic knife, switchblade type. Hhmm...... ------------------------------ From: "Bill Lowery" Date: Wed, 31 Oct 2001 18:12:07 -0000 Subject: eskrima: Re: Kukhri Hi Gary, The notch is there to cut your finger on. Once this is done the blade is not resheathed until the blood of the enemy has been spilt! I studied silat for a short while at a sufi/tasawwuf mosque back in '90 or '91. I remember that we would have long prayer/chant meetings to call on good jiin and cast out bad jiin prior to training. All of the chanting rituals that we would practice had an intense effect on our training. Talk about being in "the zone." It was a really amazing experience. Mabuhay ang eskrima!
