Greetings to all, While training yesterday with my instructor, we went over some olisi palad (palm stick) techniques, most of which were simple blocks, locks, parrying, basic stuff. My instructor mentioned that the palm stick was intended as a training tool to take the place of a balisong. His explination was that while training with a balisong was realistic, the chance of it opening in your hand is always present. From this rational he stated that the palm stick was developed as a training tool. Is this true? Or are there some schools that treat the palm stick as a completely seperate weapon which has distinct traits (like striking and/or blocking) that one can not perform with a closed balisong? Any input and/or opinions would be very much appreciated. Walter V. __________________________________________________ FREE voicemail, email, and fax...all in one place. It seems that sweat contains a potent germ-fighting agent that may lend a hand in fighting off infections, according to a report released on Sunday. What's more, German researchers have isolated the gene responsible for the compound. They report their findings in the advance online publication of the journal Nature Immunology for December. Dr. Birgit Schittek of Eberhard-Karls University in Tubingen, Germany, and colleagues dubbed the gene--and the protein it produces--dermicidin. ``Dermicidin can probably limit an infection very early,'' Schittek told Reuters Health. ``Sweating is in this way a first line of defense against infectious agents,'' the researcher added. It seems that dermicidin is manufactured in the body's sweat glands, secreted into the sweat and transported to the surface of the skin, the report indicates. ``This is the first antimicrobial (agent) found which is produced by cells in the human skin and which is permanently produced--this means that it provides a constant protection against invading microorganisms,'' Schittek said. The investigators found that dermicidin was active against many different types of bacteria, including Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis, which are normal inhabitants of the intestines that can infect wounds or contaminate food, as well as Staphylococcus aureus (a common cause of skin infections), and Candida albicans (a fungus that is another cause of infections). The findings indicate ``that human sweat contains at least one antimicrobial protein, which may play a role in the regulation of human skin (microbes),'' the authors write. Dermcidin ``may help limit infection by potential pathogens in the first few hours following bacterial colonization,'' they add. I believe that the blade form was carried to the sub-continent by the troops of Alexander the Great and was copied by local kamis. There are khukuris hanging on the walls of Nepal's National Museum which are 500 years old or even more. So, the long history is one of the things that make the knife magic. Another thing that adds to the magic of the khukuri is the cultural and religious significance which has worked its way into the knife. Almost everything about the knife means something. What we call a blood groove is said to be trident of the Hindu god, Shiva, the destroyer. The cho or notch has various meanings, the sun and moon, symbols of Nepal, the sexual apparatus of Hindu gods and goddesses, a cow track because the cow is sacred to the Hindus. The buttcap of the knife is said to resemble the eye of god, always watching, ever seeing. The rings around the handle mean something but the true significance has been lost in the mists of time. Even the basic curve is said to look like a cresent moon, a symbol of Nepal. .... ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Mon, 05 Nov 2001 19:18:17 PST Subject: eskrima: . ------------------------------ End of Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V8 #485 **************************************** To unsubscribe from the eskrima-digest send the command: unsubscribe eskrima-digest -or- unsubscribe eskrima-digest your.old@address in the BODY (top line, left justified) of a "plain text" e-mail addressed to majordomo@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com.
