On my flight to Knoxville I couldn't carry any knives on my person, but I could carry as many mini mag-lights as I wanted. >> Tuhon McGrath, Until last February, the juvenile correctional facility I work at was located in a part of town that Fort Wayne, Indiana isn't particularly proud of. Upon arriving at, and leaving from work, and while conducting security checks of the perimeter during the night, we often encountered some of the more colorful characters of the community. I am not allowed to carry any obvious weapons, being a worker in juvenile corrections, but I do carry a mini mag light on my duty belt. It came in handy a couple of times when I was forced to deal with a trespasser at 3:00am, at a time when I did not want to have to deal with them entirely empty-handed (like the time I found a man rummaging through my glove compartment after smashing the rear window of my car to gain entry). A mini mag light is a great back-up; it is not obvious, and in the hands of a person trained in Yawara or FMA's, does the job quite nicely. Also, you made an excellent point about the short folders that many people (including myself) do carry...these smaller knives does have their limitations, the most obvious being how accurate the short blade forces you to be. I know personally of a man who was stabbed repeatedly in the chest with a Buck folding hunter...he wasn't even aware he had been stabbed until he started to bleed out. Since this took a few minutes, he was still able to beat the man he had attacked into critical condition before the effects of the stab wounds slowed him down. A larger knife would have had more of a stopping effect. In the style of Jiu jitsu that I train in, we use a palm stick (we call it yarawa) not only for training knife techniques. We use it for controlling, striking and blocking tachniques. The Filipino Martial Arts system that is incorparated into the style of jiu jitsu is the Pekiti Tirsia system. We are taught to adapt the techniques to what ever we may have in our hands. So Walter, try to not think of the palm stick as a training tool, think of it as a blunt weapon that can be used. I am not sure of the concealment laws where you are from, however, carrying a blunt item on your person may not draw much of an attention from Law Enforcement. Then again adapting the techniques to say a pen, spoon, or what ever you may have in your surroundings. I hope that this will help you. Bye Everyone. ------------------------------ From: "Dale" Date: Fri, 9 Nov 2001 12:29:15 -0600 Subject: eskrima: Address Change Hello to all the people in my address book, I have changed my e-mail account at school and will exclusively use the following address.
