Been lurking for some time... nice to be back! Had to get in on this one. The 'yawara', 'Kubotan', 'Dulo y dulo' or whatever you want to call it is an exellent carry option for those of us who exist in areas where readily defined 'weapons' are a No- No or so restricted (Kalifornia) as to be a detriment to actual use in personal defense. Fist loads are the little 'extra' you can sneak in and totally disrupt an attack, gain control, and seek out your next option. TRAIN IN ALL ASPPECTS OF THEIR USE!!! With the recent increased restrictions on air travel these make exellent carry options, HOWEVER; I have been stopped by AP security ( in the early 90's)on the way through and told my 'keychain' had to stay behind... it was the Kubotan. On top of this I was recently not allowed to carry on an 'Impact Kerambit' (AWESOME!!!!), probably because I told them it was for deep muscle massage, but they noticed the word 'impact'. Due to all this I have refocused a large portion of my training to the use of improvised weapons. I now carry a nice fat metal pen, ie: impact weapon, when I travel, and have began to rediscover the beauty of ingenuity! As you all know ANYTHING that can be held in the hand, or projected from the hand can be a weapon (see 'intent'). I'm sure this is a pretty loose definition. I've been training in MA's for a little over 20 yrs, and played a lot of lip service to actually testing the functionallity of improvised weaponry, and am finding that my current endevors are unfolding lots of good stuff! I was shown by a long time practicioner of Hisardu (sp) once how to roll up a newspaper in a way to not only make it an effective impact weapon, but with a point that could puncture your larnyx! I spend a lot of time now picking up the odd item and determining not IF it would be effective, but HOW to make it effective. Good luck to all in 'creating' a 'new' arsenal.
