Bear ------------------------------ From: "Jay de Leon" Date: Sat, 10 Nov 2001 13:27:42 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Sam Beckett's yawara-palm sticks-dulo y dulo-kubotan-IMPROVISE Excellent post. I learned yawara from jiu-jitsu and palm sticks from arnis in the Philippines, and practiced with various versions of the commercial kubotan here in the US. (I believe the word kubotan came from Tak Kubota who popularized the commercial kubotans sold as "keychains.") While we were training with palm sticks, my arnis grandmaster in RP spoke of a similar weapon of the same family, so to speak. Picture a palm stick with proportional razor-sharp spear points at both ends. He called them "dos puntas." On one of my trips to RP, I had a dozen "trainer" dos puntas made. I supplied the palm sticks, and a metal fence maker made and attached the metal spear points made from his metal fence materials. I call it a "trainer" dos puntas because the points and blade are not sharp, but even my trainer dos puntas will easily gouge an eye or a chunk of flesh out. I would consider a regular sharp dos puntas even harder to defend against than, say, a small folder. Of course you may not (legally and practically) carry such a weapon around, but it is great fun and excellent training practicing with it. And in line with Sam Beckett's suggestion, keep this concept in mind just in case you have to IMPROVISE.
