HI, I've been away for a long time (from the ED) and was pleased to see that it is business as usual; a good bit of debate on various matters. I was in the Phillipines at Easter and was pretty shocked at the lack of any obvios sources of FMA training, especially when compared to the plethora of opportunities to learn TKD and BJJ. I spent a week on Palawan and a couple of days in Manila and was overwhelmed by the number of schools offering TKD; I saw one match-box size advert for Modern Arnis in the window of a martial arts shop in Greenhills. The parks are the best place to look: Circle Park in Quezon and Rizal park in Manila. But the fact remains that Filipinos do not want to learn FMA, if they did it would be more open. There is clearly a fashion thing going on here; TKD is foreign=exotic and you get to wear a uniform and a coloured belt, it is not something that your grandfather does> You tell me, which is more attractive? The main point is that we need to remember that they are children and not adults and they are not extensions of our egos................. Often I have seen and witnessed where the adults use the children to satisfy the teacher or the parents needs. Children, especially under 12 to 14 need to play, learn motor skills, some discipline, social interactions, learn about themselves through their bodies, and have fun. For me I really want to remember not to try and create little followers but leaders........... I also usually learn as much from them as them form me and again, they are children!!! Peace, GHSoto I find it really In respect to training your own children or teaching an organized group ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Fri, 30 Nov 2001 12:19:19 PST Subject: Re: eskrima: Research on FMA- W32.Sircam.Worm@mm > again i could be wrong but...... based on what i have read here the past few > days its what i believe is actually happening. Umm, I seriously doubt it. You are describing something very very different from what these folks have seen.
