I often wondered why they didn't talk to me in all the langauges they speak when I was a wee lad and just a sponge for that kind of stuff. They told me they had tried that with my older brother, and it hadn't worked, so they figured it didn't work at all. I really wish they had, it would have made those language requirements in high school and college a lot easier. Likewise, many parents forced thier children to sit for hours of piano lessons. Some people look back on those lessons and cringe while others enjoy sitting down picking the ivories, the sometimes painful/boring lessons are not remembered at all. It seems to be in the child's temperment. I think it was Sugar Ray Leonard who said that he wanted his son to be a boxer, but his son liked tennis instead. The closest I've come to this is a serious relationship I had. The woman had a young son (age 3 when we first met), and over the six or so years we were together, I did a lot with him. I was lucky in that he had a great affinity for the martial arts. His mom didn't want him in a class playing with knives and sticks, but didn't mind us stick fighting at home. Here are a couple of thoughts about young children (that are just my experience): - - maybe it's the media, but cool moves were it. If he saw something third person (if you will), it might not be impressive; but seeing it second person (i.e having it done to him) often put something into the 'cool' category. If it hit me in a way that I've never been hit before, then I want to learn how to do it. - - cool also went to targetting. Subtle targetting like hitting the incoming stick arm didn't seem as noticeable as, ah, other strikes. Unless it was something like 'Hey he's avoiding my hits and hitting me somewhere'. - - defense was hard to put into the vocabulary (hmmm, lesson here?). He understood "if you don't want to get hit like that... " but it didn't stick past the lesson. Adding "and you can then hit him (i.e. counterattack) like this" worked sometimes. - - likewise the strength argument was difficult. By that, I mean it was hard to say 'see how my structure is stronger, and that means that even if we make the same strike, mine will beat yours'. Maybe it's because children are smart enough to see that you're stronger anyway, so they don't give those things a lot of credence. - - It's hard to teach a child to slow things down to see the finer points. If he's making a mistake, it's better for you to demonstrate the mistake and let him see how easily you can be hit, and then show him that he's doing the same thing. - - Adults sometimes let ego into play. Students don't like to learn from a teacher they can hit, and teachers sometimes feed into this. However, children love to let lose and try things out in the world of play. So some playacting at defeating you helps. - -Set the ground rules about not being over-enthusiastic in hitting. We have to be responsible because we have a weapon. And be prepared for a lot of stray whacks. I know from previous posts that people soak rattan sticks in boiled linseed oil. Does anybody have experience in soaking kamagong sticks in linseed oil? Does anybody have any other tips for protecting or enhancing the quality of kamagong sticks? Thanks. Brian p.s. Has anybody heard from Chad Goetz (spelling?) from Full Contact Stickfighting in Hawaii. I haven't seen a post from him in a long time. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Buy the perfect holiday gifts at Yahoo! Chad dropped off around the time he was moving or something like that, back in the Spring. His website was fullcontacthi.com.
