I'm impressed, too. I think I only know 6, (and can only do 5 of them at all well). From a saber grip: (1) over, (2) under From an icepick grip: (3) over, (4) under Form holding the latch (5) forward, (6) backward I have the Jeff Imada books as well, and think they're great. A friend also gave me Ernesto Presas' book on balisongs (which is *really* intimidating.) In that book there are openings and closings that go from one hand to the other.    - -------------------------------------------------- Scott Kinney Project Manager sakinney@ix.netcom.com - -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ From: "Michael Koblic" Date: Mon, 3 Dec 2001 18:49:01 -0800 Subject: eskrima: Teaching offspring "Not to brag, but both my parents speak three or four languages. I often wondered why they didn't talk to me in all the langauges they speak when I was a wee lad and just a sponge for that kind of stuff. They told me they had tried that with my older brother, and it hadn't worked, so they figured it didn't work at all. I really wish they had, it would have made those language requirements in high school and college a lot easier." Just a perspective from the other side of the fence: It is indeed easier if both parents speak the foreign lingo, particularly to each other at home. We do not, and my kids never saw the reason to learn an obscure language from me. Peer pressure has a lot to do with it - it just is not cool to talk funny. I have created peer pressure by putting both of them into a French Immersion for 7 years. As you correctly surmise, they are now thankful doing their French finals in the first year of the university. Unfortunately, kids will only learn what the kids want to learn. You can expose them to all sorts of things and they will pretty much tell you what they will do and what they wont. I exposed both of them to stick fighting in their early teens. Both of them could do it. For instance both learned the sumbrada box pattern in about half an hour (I have seen adults struggle with the same pattern for weeks and some have never mastered it) but neither really showed any keeness for the art. I would have pushed them (I needed partners desperately) but I really did not see the point of forcing it down their throats. Both had done Tae Kwon-Do (the only decent fights in that dojo were between the brother and sister, there was no hesitation in closing the distance between them unlike the usual stand-off -and-wave-arms-and-feet jobs) so they were not afraid of contact. My son has done some boxing but without any real passion. In the end I guess there are many other priorities in their lives, but who knows. I liked Tuhon McGrath's comments about FMA being the mature martial art and there is always a possibility that they will rediscover it as they mature. It certainly took me a while to find it! Seasons greetings I'd like to apologize to those of you that have been trying to get a hold of me over the last few months, I promise I am not intentionally ignoring anyone, yesterday is the first time I have read my personal E-mail in almost 2 months. I had over 505 messages, and I am sorry to say I only read a few and will not reply to any at this time. As many of you have noticed my web page is gone!!!, a few months back I went with a new provider ( cable ) for the speed and all that ,well in the process my page got all forked up!! So I will be having a new one developed soon. As far as teaching Balintawak or Cuentada I have only been teaching a very select few do to my time available. I bought a small expediting company last year with the intention of getting in and out quick make my money and run, but this has not panned out and I am up to my eye balls in Lawyers, courts and what not. I am hoping it will all be over with soon. So please those of you who have been trying to get a hold of me please bear with me I mean no disrespect in not replying to you. Starting next week if you wish to contact me at my new e- mail I will respond I promise. Thanks for all your interest Rocky PAsiwk Anciong Bacons original Balintawak Founder Cuentada De Mano P.S what little training I have been doing is in Hsing I, but I recently was given a tape with a guy named Tuhon Sacoy (sp) I think that was his name I was quite impressed and look forward to seeing more. I like the all blade thing, and was quite impressed with his movement, its rare to find someone built like me ( kinda fire plugish ) that can move gracefully you just don't find it that much in heavier guys. Anyways I like what I saw and intend to follow up on it . ------------------------------ From: Ray Terry Date: Mon, 03 Dec 2001 22:17:32 PST Subject: eskrima: Teaching offspring > Both had done Tae Kwon-Do (the only decent fights in that dojo were between > the brother and sister, there was no hesitation in closing the distance > between them unlike the usual stand-off -and-wave-arms-and-feet jobs)...
