Hmmm...I see your perspective. Frankly, I'm puzzled by this problem whenever I look at curriculum. The issue of whether to teach one or two arts simultaneously and/or blend them while teaching is a really tough one. It's also an issue on which there is never much of a consensus. What I can say is that I've seen people on each side of this argument simplify, sometimes ad absurdum, the effectiveness of the opposite perspective. But I've seen good people come out of each approach. I guess if you want to create a teacher they should really know the art. The catch is that most of the time there is always more to learn in an art. I sincerely believe that you CAN spend a whole lifetime learning just one art and that this is a good thing. To be sure, if there is any one compelling argument for isolating arts it is this: it is less of a political headache when you go to teach. But I've also seen some good people that learned more than one art simultaneously. They're not all weak minded, out-of-shape, seminar browsing, stationwagon driving, pyramid toting, near sighted, balding, fat, old guys. Well, okay, Tom Meadows notwithstanding. =8^0 Sometimes I've seen fighters seek out only one or two combinations from another art. That's all they wanted. But they learned to use those one or two combinations better than the guys that taught 'em. Maybe creating a fighter is like being a man of few words. Teach them to say a lot with a small vocabulary. And, if you wanna win, let the fighting environment influence the vocabulary. Or, like the old school days, let 'em get beaten up first, then teach them what it was that hit them. (Just not before you get to have the amusement of whackin' them with it yourself a few times. :D ) But, I digress. To cross-train or not? To blend or not? Those are tough ones. I would respect your opinion either way, but I think that there may be more than one right answer. First of all Balisong is first made in town of Batanggas now is name after the knife the Barrio Balisong. Since this knife is made in Luzon Tagalog speaking province. Hiligaynon word is not used, therefore referring this as name after from Hiligaynon word is missed lead the readers, of the true meaning of the knife "Balisong." Okay, some say its is "Bali" a Tagalog word mean break or fold, "Sungay" a tagalog word means horn, because the common handle is made out of the dear horn, or even bone, in a dear horn passion that's one. Okay this the version of our history. In Garimot System Arnis based on what my family understand, my mother is from Rosario, Batangas next town from Malvar, Batangas where Barrio Balisong is located. Balisong is a name after to a two word also, "Bali" a Tagalog word meaning break or fold, and from the word "Sundang" meaning blades, the original call to it is "Balisundang" meaning folding knife, time went by they shortened to "Balisung" pronounced just like it, sound with u instead of o later, became Balisong. This what we know to this knife, In regards of the opening, you can open this more than 300 ways depend what you called opening or manipulation, my Dad always told me all you need is to learn to open it one way and closed it one way. Manipulation hundreds of manipulation, sky is the limit, new ideas can add to it, as you learn more and more. Well, I just want to add this to the positive discussion. On a semi-serious note, a great workout for handspeed is a game of "squeeze the snout" played as follows: 1) Challenge a cooperative medium to large size dog by words "Squeeze the snout!" 2) With one hand try to catch both the dog's jaws (thus squeezing the snout). 3) The dog's task is to avoid this and catch your hand in his teeth. 4) If the dog beats you only 4:1 you are doing well 5) Treat bites and cuts in usual manner Note: not recommended in areas where rabies is prevalent Mike Koblic, Campbell River, BC ------------------------------ From: abanico-video-knuettel@t-online.de (Dieter =?ISO-8859-1?Q?Kn=FCttel?=) Date: Fri, 07 Dec 2001 11:40:49 +0100 Subject: eskrima: FMA festival in Germany Hi everybody, I would like to inform the members of the eskrima digest, that Alfred Plath from Quick-Stick in Gemany and I, Dieter Knüttel from ABANICO Video Productions and Modern Arnis Germany (DAV), are organizing the first Filipino Martial Arts Festival in Europe! It will take place at the 23rd and 24th of February 2002 in Mönchengladbach /Germany. This is near Düsseldorf and not too far from Cologne. I was inspired from the way people from different styles treat each other here in the Eskrima digest, which I think is almost always with respect to the other style. So that I suggested to Alfred, that we should organize a festival, where many FMA stlyes meet and this way the respect and acceptance from one style to the other is getting higher. Then he took off and started to organize the Festival and now it will take place and it will be THE event for FMA in Europe. These are the styles and instructors that will teach (2 - 3 lessons per style) during the Festival: Modern Arnis, Latosa Escrima, Lameco Escrima, Lapunti Arnis, Inosanto Kali, ETF Escrima, Lontayao Kali, Felices Escrima, Pentjak Silat, Balintawak Arnis, Serrada Escrima, Inayan Eskrima, Warrior Escrima, Doce Pares Escrima, u.s.w. But Alfred told me, that within the next week, these pages should be up in english as well. This will be THE FMA event in Europe and when I see how much work is involved, I am sure, we will not do it again. So if you want to be there, grab the chance, there will not be a second one. You can contact me (dk@abanico.de) if you need more information. I hope to see some of you there.
