No tournament travel to Afghanistan recommended for this coming winter... :) Forwarded message: AFGHANISTAN Travel Warning United States Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs Washington, DC 20520 December 17, 2001 The Department of State strongly warns U.S. citizens against travel to Afghanistan. An interim government is expected to take charge in Afghanistan until national elections can take place. Nevertheless, U.S. forces are still engaged in military action against the remnants of the former Taliban regime and the terrorist al-Qaida network. Afghan opponents of the former Taliban regime are also engaged in military operations in several parts of the country. Travel in all areas of Afghanistan, including the capital Kabul and all major cities, is unsafe due to military operations, banditry, and the possibility of unrest given the fluid political and military situation. Several foreign journalists were murdered in November 2001. An estimated 5-7 million land mines are scattered throughout the countryside and pose a danger to travelers. Much of the country is also facing an acute food shortage. There is little infrastructure to provide any public services. The United States opened a liaison office at Bebe Mahro (Airport) Road, Kabul on December 17, 2001. There is no consular officer included among the permanent staff. As a result, the office will not be able to provide consular services, even in emergencies. Emergency services to U.S. citizens who travel to or remain in Afghanistan despite this Warning are severely limited and will have to be provided by the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad. U.S. citizens who decide to enter Afghanistan in spite of this Warning are strongly urged to register and obtain updated security information in neighboring Pakistan at the American Embassy in Islamabad or the U.S. Consulate in Peshawar at the following addresses: U.S. Embassy Islamabad, Diplomatic Enclave, Ramna 5, Islamabad, telephone (92-51) 2080-0000, Consular Section telephone (92-51) 2080-2700, fax (92-51) 822-632 U.S. Consulate Peshawar, 11 Hospital Road, Cantonment, Peshawar, telephone (92-91) 279-801 through 803, fax (92-91) 276-712 This replaces the Department of State Travel Warning for Afghanistan issued November 23, 2001, to provide information about the opening of a U.S. liaison office. ------------------------------ From: "tim hartman" Date: Mon, 17 Dec 2001 15:29:42 Subject: eskrima: Modern Arnis Camp Greeting, I am proud to announce the first World Modern Arnis Alliance training camp. Class room is a controlled environment by the Teacher. I believe in Full Contact for sure and training for the streets. Muscle memory. for sure to pull thru. Controlled in a sense, the head gets hit, match is over. Why, because in reality you get hit the body will freeze for that instant, that is were an oponent can finish you of. You may recover from a hit, but hard to recover when the oponent is grapling you and breaking something The Teacher or Ref. Controls that in class. Train Safe You do not let the training match continieu, and I do agree, it dulls the pain and we then have a false sense of bravery. You get clocked in the head, match is over. So learn to block. Easier said then done. Always do remember, breach the gap on a beat of one to do a teachnieque is a fital key to overcome the pounding. It becomes more intense with the 5 1/2 foot long staff Too many folks with exrtreme fast sticks. Train, train and train more, and train safe Train for the offensive rather then defensive to breach the gap In a training match, be close to the practitioners and control the training. Folks will learn fast enough that just hitting with no precise skills becomes counter productive. Take the time to absorb what will work Hormat Pak Vic << From: slbedell@webtv.net (Sheldon Bedell) Date: Sun, 16 Dec 2001 12:47:08 -0500 (EST) Subject: eskrima: Re: Inayan_Eskrima/FMA-Digest V8 #530 In regards to padding in a practice session. I personally think that creates a false sense of bravery and accomplishment in the student. When using pads one will tend to take a blow that should have been blocked or avoided.the pad dulls the pain of the blow and the student gets careless because he/she is not injured by the strike. No I do not advocate full contact in class, save that for the street. I do think that flow drills, and light body contact should be practiced with control. Hello, When I trained with Suro Inay in the 70s, we asked about using protective equipment. He wouldn't allow it, because thought it would make us sloppy. I got hit hard 20-30 times per training session. During the first few years of training, we focused on learning techinque. The last few years, the focus was on avoiding pain. It definitely made our technique sharper. I had to learn to knock on doors with my left hand. (I'm right handed.) The only time we used protective gear (boxing gloves only) was when we sparred 2-on-1 empty-hand full contact. Over the years, I've decide that eye protection is okay. (I learned this the hard way) I'd avoid using any other gear. My 2 cents. I have said several times on this forum if you are going to be in any kind of business no matter how big or small BUY A LAWYER , their a great investment. People I know, that know you say your a good/nice hardworking guy. And I can tell you this its the nice guys that get hammered when bad things happen. Remember when you make a commitment to teach ( even if you don't teach like a business) you must run the liability aspect of your school as a business. No matter how close you may think a student is if he/she gets hurt bad enough all that will go out the window!!! Always check your lease most leases ( at least the one's I have my tenants sign ) do not allow for sub-letting, which means if you rented some space out to advanced students and someone got hurt, you are responsible and in violation of your lease. Even if you are allowed to sub-lease have your renter supply you with proof of liability insurance naming you as the landlord and possibly his instructor as a name covered. Remember wavers are usually not worth the paper they are written on. There are no magic words you can say or print that will keep you from being sued. We live in an age when Lawyers are dime a dozen, primarily because during the Vietnam era they stayed in school for as long as possible hoping not to go to war, so you now have a vast amount of Lawyers whose only way to make money is to chase ambulances. You may want to think about forming an "S" Corporation, its relatively cheap ( usually under a $1000.00 ) and helps to provide a barrier between your self and the business, while letting you personally write off or receive the benefits from said business. Remember it only takes one person with an injury that you or I may laugh at and not even bother with, and your whole life and even your families financial well being could be turned up side down. It would be a shame for someone like you who loves his art and teaching like you do, to be screwed because of an honest mistake. I know I sound critical and you can take it for what it is worth, but don't trust anyone!!!!!!!!!! When it comes to something that might effect your family welfare. I know from experience I did and it cost me $150,000.00 and a criminal charge that I am still trying to get removed from my record. All because I trusted a friend who was in the F.B.I. and I took his advise on a business matter 8 years ago that I still regret!!! If you wonder where I get my info from, I retain 3 Lawyers at all times, and my top student Master Hal Edwards has (3) Doctorates degrees 2 of them in Law. And over the last 20 years I picked up a few things from him, although sometime I am a little hard headed and didn't listen, but hey I have no one to blame but my self. SO in a nut shell spend a little money and do things right, so you can keep doing what you do best, and keep spreading the FMA's in the excellent manner in which you do. Good Luck!!
