I'm having flashbacks of Modern Arnis guys asking me copyright questions, AAARGH!!! Rocky - I do still want to come out and train, but I've been having a hard time getting out. Haven't even seen Manong Ted in almost a year, I hope he will still train me?!?! I'm waiting to take the FBI's phase II test, so maybe I'll even end up somewhere near you. As I recall, it had elbow, punches, and some low kicks. It look a lot like streetfighting. According to the article just quoted, they like to close in and attack suddenly, i.e., a sucker puncher. It seems like someone gave streetfighting a different name. You can learn most of that system in a good boxing gym, or in a traditional "jutsu" oriented martial arts school. The part about the foot fencers having to fight without dropping the water carriers sounds more like a Monty python skit than something to be taken seriously. It also seems that they would be attacked by armed men, making it more unlikely that they would hold on to the water and fight, than drop the water and run. The statement that it influenced boxing is unprovable, at best. The statement that Copoiera fighters tumbled into heavy bush in order to evade and escape seems odd, as there is a lot of stuff on the forest floor, i.e., roots, sticks, and other sharp pointy objects on the ground. However, the tumbling moves do seem to favor the small and athletic, and it is a unique and effective way to attack somebody. How the author missed that observation is interesting. All in all, it would seem to me that the author seems to be fishing for new students in a less then ethical way. ------------------------------ From: T2J2M2@cs.com Date: Mon, 31 Dec 2001 20:04:57 EST Subject: eskrima: Combat conditioning I bought that book by Matt Furey and his tape, "The Royal Court." It Is pricey, but it is good information on training. I vaguely remember something about the law protecting parody, and if you look at the KIL logo it is pretty clear it is not a KFC logo :-D Anybody know anything about this?" There was a restaurant in Seattle called "Dances with clams" which was threatened with a lawsuit by an obscure movie of similar name lest they change their name. I believe they did but someone might know the outcome of that event more accurately.
