Hapkido is not a competition art. Though, as Ray pointed out, there have been some groups that have made some competitions in order to bring more Hapkidoin together and help promote the art. There are some competions for Hapkido in Korea, but they are more of the demonstration type of contest. Again, it is to bring people together and to help promote the art. As for what is taught in Hapkido, it is not taught to win tournaments or to compete, it is taught as a self-defense art. Yes, there are flashy demo type techniques, but then there are also techniques for actual combat or fighting. Please e-mail me privately if you want more info on Hapkido, or the real story behind the "Hapkido is for competition and not effective" comment. Since most converts to the Five Percenters convert while in prison, hence the name "Jailhouse Rock". From what he showed me, it looks like a set of blocks and counters with a lot of rules, like keep your back to a wall, stay out of counters, etc... very simple and practical stuff. Anyway, Happy New Year everyone. My next newsletter will come out soon! It might be noted that word Kampilan also defines to "any" long sword and of no particular blade style. It derives from the noun "kampi", a term the U.S. Calvary borrowed from the Ibanag of the north which defines to "side arm" as in bladed, with the verb being kampilan or the actual use of the kampi. The U.S. Calvary in their travels throughout the Philippines then infused this borrowed word into the various local dialects when referring to any long bladed sword. There are indeed several blade styles of "kampilan" used for various purposes both combative and agricultural. T'boli are not only farmers but extremely talented artisans who are noted for making near perfect imitations for the tourist trade to which they have made a cottage industry. As for their blades, it should be noted that they do not have an "in house" potaoan, (therefore technically there is no such thing as a T'boli blade) as they obtain their "fighting" blades via trade with neighboring tribes, usually the Tiruay who offer fine blades for agricultural use. These blades are referred to in their dialect as "langgaman" or "working blades". The blade depicted on eBay is likely to be "tourista" and imported in from China to fashion and then sell at the open market. The blade stlye, known locally as "potol" which refers to a blade that widens at the end, is not folded laminate like the fighting blades of the Yakan, Samal, etc, but plain steel etched with battery acid which explains why the blades sometime have a green hue to them. Also judging from the "garang" the eBay blade will not hold an edge very long. The so called "carved" brass handle or "kapet" is of lesser quality and is obviously not fashioned by a "garagoang", but rather are sheets of brass, heated and pressed onto a mold as one will see when comparing it to similar so called T'boli sword handles as they will all look the same. The so-called patina or aged effect is done by rubbing on residue from used car oil, or with citrus fruit, usually both. Coins, bangles, and beads, etc are left in salt water for an aged effect. A dealer at a gun show tried to sell a similar sword, claiming the T'boli "ceremonial" sword was well over one hundred years old, explaining that the older swords and scabbards are adorned with old coins, amulets and the like. Upon closer inspection, the coins were dated, "1973".
