Professor Dennis Newsome was interviewed on the subject on the internet. At the African Arts seminar in Atlanta three years ago, Dennis gave me 30-45 minutes of history of JR. Seems it began as African arts that came over with the slaves. Was practiced in the living quarters so as not to be seen. Upon emancipation many slaves were locked up by police so as to support the work force needed by prominent landowners. So it was practiced and taught in jails even until today. There are many variations, each associated with and named according to the penal institution they evolved in. There are other names also. Sorry, I did not learn any techniques. It is not for us white boys. Dennis is also one of, if not the, top exponent of Capoeira and a super guy. We will have single and double stick fighting for men and women in the seniors and masters divisions. We will also have a forms division. The Arnold Battle of Columbus is one of the largest fitness and Martial Arts expo's in the United States today. This will be a wonderful opportunity for us as FMA practicioners to spread our art to the public. Anyone wishing to participate or wanting more information please visit our website at: WWW.Asianfightingarts.com Or email us with questions at: Staff@Asianfightingarts.com Click on the Arnold Battle of Columbus Link on our home page. In addition to the Stickfighting and forms competition there will also be a Kali clinic given by Guru Ken Pannell. I made the "wndering" question as a joke, i.e., I know that Hapkido is not what one of our colleagues had called it. Re: The World Hapkido Games Fed., Ray, I don't know much but I've heard of this ... encountered it somewhere in reading. I remember a Korean website (hapkido.net maybe) that mentioned the WHGF and posted notes about other Korean systems, stuff I'd never heard of before (that doesn't say much, there's a LOT I ain't gonna hear of in this life!!! same's true for everybody). Also, Jailhouse is supposedly similar to some Silat. Just passing on what I've heard. Interesting, the footwork is often opposite that of Capoeira's O Gingada (Ginga or Jinga). Could they be aspects of broader fighting knowledge, like forward and reverse triangle movements? O Gingada uses reverse triangle and more kicking. Oh yeah, also read something by Newsome re: 52 Hands which said that it was something like Chi Sao. Mitakuye Oyasin. Reverse triangle??? As in footwork? Is that the same as female triangle? i.e. footwork steps that angle out instead of in (angling in would be male triangle).
