So to > repeat my students > curiosity - What is the most important thing your > Instructor ever taught > you? Hi Steve ... good question. I've trained with many instructors over the years and each of them has taught me things I consider very valuable. Shihan Larry Davenport, my old Goju-Ryu instructor, taught me the importance of basics. Guru Ken Pannell, my FMA/IMA instructor and the instructor I hold dearest, has taught me many things. Of them I would say that flow is the most important. Whether it's flowing from technique to technique, style to style, counter to counter, or situation to situation (in a more general non-MA regard). Prof. Joe Lansdale, the guy I'm training with in Texas, said this to me once ... and I think it's probably the most important he's taught me thus far: "I wouldn't give a plug nickel for a man without an ego ... much less a martial arts instructor without an ego. Ego is important ... but a lot of people confuse it with 'egotism.' Egotism is have too much ego ... that's dangerous. Having an ego simply means you're sure of yourself, your skill, ability, and training. Without an ego, you can't teach because you'll always appear hesitant to the students and they'll lose faith ... no matter how good you are."
