Beginners are welcome, but are advised to bring a partner. The Island of Cebu is noted for producing some of the finest martial artists in the Philippines. In the early 1900s, the Saavedra brothers were the most feared fighters in Cebu and many of the great eskrimadors of that century trained with them. The Balintawak, Doce Pares, Serrada and Kalis Ilustrisimo styles all trace their roots back to the Saavedra brothers. Antonio Ilustrisimo was one of their training partners and the sword work of Kalis Ilustrisimo was influenced by his training with them. Antonio Illustisimo Filemon (Momoy) Canete learned directly from the Saavedras, and his stick and dagger methods that today we call San Miguel Eskrima, are based directly on their teachings. This seminar series will present the essence of the teachings of these two legendary masters. Each class will be split into two segments. Tom Bisio will present the stick and dagger techniques and training methods of the late Filemon Canete. Mark Wiley will present the 12 footwork patterns and 27 counters of Kalis Ilustrisimo with emphasis on the sword. Techniques and training methods will be presented clearly and completely, so that seminar participants can continue to progress after the seminar's completion. Location: 293 Church St. (Bet. Walker and White Streets) - 2 & 1/2 blocks below Canal St. Ring Buzzer marked: Bisio-Wolff Internal Arts Dates: 6 Mondays: Feb 10, 17, 24 March 3, 10, 17 Fee: $100 per class or $500 for all six. Space is limited and a deposit is required to hold your place. Tom Bisio has been teaching martial arts for the last 20 years. He studied San Miguel Eskrima in Cebu with Filemon Canete from 1979 -1986. He teaches Xing-Yi and Ba Gua and runs an acupuncture clinic in NYC. Mark V. Wiley is an internationally recognized teacher, researcher and writer of Filipino martial arts. He was a protégé of the late grandmaster Angel Cabales in Serrada Escrima and was privately trained in the Philippines by the late Antonio Ilustrisimo and Tony Diego in the art of Kalis Ilustrisimo. I will be changing how this list is managed. The list server software is changing from Majordomo to Mailman and there will be a new web front-end for you to subscribe, unsubscribe, stay subscribed but turn off mail while you're on vacation, request plain text email or mime format email, etc. In a day or two, or three, you will receive a direct email that provides more info. It will also provide you with a randomized password that you will need to change your subscription info. With the password you receive in the mail you can, of couse, change it to something you may more easily remember. The email that will arrive soon will also provide the URL for you to http to for yet more info. The new set-up should also permit those interested to go with individual email msgs instead of the digestified version of the list. All subscribers will be added as receiving a digest and I will announce later when you may, if you're interested, switch yourself to the non-digest form of the list. More info later, stay tuned.
