I've had almost every kind close accidentally. So far this one has worked perfectly. The only other one that's worked as well has been the positive lock on the Benchmade automatic knives. But 1) While I live in Oregon (where they are legal) I work in Washington where they are a felony to even think about. 2) People at work would be a little unhappy if I used a "switchblade". 3) The knife belongs to my wife :-) So I'm happy with the new CRKTs... ------------------------------ From: Sean Maguire Date: Tue, 15 Jan 2002 07:43:01 -0800 (PST) Subject: eskrima: RE: Ryan Model Seven Ray wrote >Just picked up the new CRKT (Columbia River Knife > and Tool) Ryan Model Seven > folder. I have noticed that some of you have been able to send 'plain text' posts to the list from your earthlink.net account. One subscriber is trying to figure out how to do that. What is the trick? Thanks. FWIW, here in crazy California, as defined in the PC, a switchblade must have a blade over 2" long. Thus a switchblade with a shorter length blade is not a switchblade and California-legal switchblades abound. I have spent a fair amount of thought regarding defenses against big cats and dogs. This is what I came up with: Think of a mountain lion as a 120 pound housecat. With this in mind, do the following: Give your cat a mouse (which I do) and try to take it away from the cat. The next time your cat is sneaking up on a bird, sneak up on the cat (which I do) and grab it by surprise. When your cat is totally fluffed up near a dog, try to pick it up. Watch two cats fight. When you are done with this you will realize that a fifteen pound housecat is capable of putting you in the Emergency Room. You will also realize that it is now OK to spank your cat ( which really does work) because it isn't even close to the level of punishment they take in a real cat fight. Even if the cat likes you, it will, in less than one second, shred your arm through pure reaction to being surprised. Big cats retain strength proportional to their weight and to appreciate this you have to read Jim Corbett's Man-eaters of Kumoan, in which he describes trailing a tiger that left a line of paw prints in the dust and a single narrow drag mark two feet on each side of the paw prints. The drag marks were from the victims toes and hands, left as the cat ran off with a full grown adult human in its mouth. It is hard to stop a mountain lion with gun, and trying to do it with a stick or knife is absurd, in the extreme. If a mountain lion, also known as a cougar or puma, attacks you, it is probably to protect its young in which case it will not be chased off and will cheerfully kill you. I do believe that they will eat human children however ,its all food to a cat if it is easy prey. I know that ceasing movement and playing dead will stop a bear attack, and this may work to some degree with adefending mother, but realistically the big cat's like to play with dead things every bit as much as housecats. I've always considered the "killing a bear with a Bowie knife" stories to be allegorical, although I am sure it has happened ( due to having absolutely NO other options) and that people did survive, and I am also sure that 9 out of 10 people did not survive these encounters. As a side note the old Masai manhood ritual of killing a lion with a spear has been thoroughly documented and was outlawed by the African government sometime in the 70's I believe. The procedure is to track a lion, let it charge you, and as it charges, plant the but of the spear and let it impale itself as it leaps. In theory it will slide down the shaft and die before it gets to you. In practice I am sure it had a low survival rate, but those that did survive were definitely men, and the kind of men you wanted as warriors in your tribe. Gee, none of this was Filipino but if Ray would let us digress for a day or two I would like to find out other's ideas on empty hand defenses against dogs, because I have never come up with really good solutions to this. E-mail me privately if you have ideas, or maybe we could use Filipino dogs as the examples, the ones that survived the barbecue pit..... How about Davy Crocket's claim to have grinned down a 'bar'? :) > As a side note the old Masai manhood ritual of killing a lion with a spear > has been thoroughly documented and was outlawed by the African government > sometime in the 70's I believe. I have a spear head that was supposedly used in just this fashion during a manhood rite. No, I didn't pay more for it after hearing that story... It was actually a gift. > Gee, none of this was Filipino but if Ray would let us digress for a day or > two I would like to find out other's ideas on empty hand defenses against > dogs, because I have never come up with really good solutions to this. No problem. One point of discussion... I once worked out with a fellow that claimed to train dogs in the military. He said they used to bite through truck tires. Think what they would do to your arm, or neck or groin. Thanks Hi Rob, I've never heard this about Serrada or Tatang's style, but the Saavedra's (Lorenzo, Teodoro and Fredercio) were part of the original group that started Doce Pares in Cebu. Balintawak branched off from DP after WWII. There is a bit more info on them in the Doce Pares entry of the FMA FAQ.
