I got a practice a great Karambit from Edges, http://www.trainingblades.com and Part 2 & 3 of Steve Tarani's Karambit Videos from Unique Publications. That completes my set. Last night I got to watch Volumde 2. It started off where the first tape left off. Once again Steve Tarani shows the empty hand technique and then it with the Karambit. None of the techniques where new but it is nice to see Steve Tarani walk through them and point out the modifications you make for the Karambit. He does a very nice job. After watching the first two tapes in this three tape series I would recommend the series to anyone interested in the Karambit or blade weapons. The only problem I do have with the tapes falls with Unique Publications. They advertise the tapes as 57 minutes long. They are actually 35 minutes long followed by 5 minutes of a preview of the next tape in series, followed by 5 minute music video / commercial for other Unique Publication videos. I suggest that Unique Publications should correctly advertise their videos or make these tapes longer as promised. Simonet's tape is crap. Yeah, he's big and strong and has obviously picked up a lot of martial arts. And he does a crackerjack job of throwing around a small cooperative woman. I'm sure he could pound on me pretty well. But what he's showing isn't Serak. His form and quality of movement aren't like any Serak I've ever seen; admittedly I've not seen too many skilled practitioners. He gets a number of principles dead wrong and doesn't show much of use in the ones that he does demonstrate. If what he says is any indication his grasp of Serak principles is minimal. His knowledge of its training methods is worse. And his hormat is nonexistent. The "shoes on a snake" crack really ticked me off. I've gone through more than one try at reviewing the tapes. The editor keeps saying (more or less) "Can't you say it's lousy in less than a page?" When Tiel and I were going through and taking notes she had to get a bit drunk to make it through. As she put it "If I'm going to stay inside this guy's head for six hours I need an anesthetic." Tiel normally doesn't drink. The crap in the martial arts mags is typical of the business. Janich and Simonet must think there is no such thing as bad publicity. Even if it means saying that they knowingly misled people. The only reason I don't say more publicly is that they are probably right. Any time their names get in print it means Paladin sells a few more tapes. On the other hand his tapes and book aren't doing the rest of us any good. To the martial arts public he represents Serak. And makes us look bad. If anyone has a good solution to this dilemma feel free to try it out :-\ Todd ------------------------------ From: Kaliman33@aol.com Date: Wed, 16 Jan 2002 20:06:46 EST Subject: eskrima: Ron Balicki in Libertyville Illinois Ron Balicki will be hosting a seminar at Northshore Academy of Martial Arts in Libertyville Illinois. Thai Traditional Massage has a Burmese variant which is similar which is Burmese massage. Letha Yoga is partner assisted stretches in which breathing is an essential component. It is a tremendous way to preparation the body for physical exercise. There is also longyi yoga and dhanda yoga in which a staff is used. The yogas were created for warriors and day to day laborers to keep themselves fit. As a matter of fact, I am on my way to India to teach several seminars and I will begin with Dr. Gyi's letha yoga series. I read the first 3rd of Dr. Gyi's book and it is a very well written book that includes unique translations of ancient documents on the topics. I expect his book will be ready sometime later this year. Dr. Gyi will also be in New York City for a seminar in May when I return from this long research trip. As well my book The Vanishing Flame: The Bare Knuckle fighting arts of India, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos and Burma will be out in definitely in late 2002.
