LaVonne assists Guro Inosanto on his seminars, and has some good skills with the fighting whip as well. Here is an excerpt from her interview: Q: Over the past few years, we've seen martial arts' popularity explode, especially in this country. More and more people are welcome the Far East approaches to the arts and exploring different cultures. Of these people, the women's role in martial arts has increased significantly (& there are some pretty tough women). We are now seeing (officially) women boxing men for the first time. How would you say being a woman martial artists has effected the way you train and teach? (or how do you see it in others?) LaVonne Martin : "It is getting better, but years ago women weren't welcomed in the martial arts. I think its funny too since hundreds of years ago women in the Philippines would take over the army when their husbands were killed. The Philippines has nine Joan of Arc's. Women do have to train in the fact that they don't let people with closed minds affect them negatively. Usually, it's the insecure that feel threatened by having women in the arts. Especially to teach them. Life's to short to worry about how someone, man or women, feels about women in the arts. I do feel women need more encouragement and to work hard. If I train a woman I expect her to work hard, not whine, worry about breaking a nail, sweating to much, and learn to get back up when knocked down. I expect men to treat women the same in the respect that they not go easy on them because they are a woman. On the other side of the coin, I expect them not to take advantage in the process of learning that they use their size & strength over them. I believe men and women can help each other in the learning process if allowed. - It depends on each person." --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Mon, 21 Jan 2002 12:44:15 -0800 To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net From: Terry Tippie Subject: [Eskrima] [re: Eskrima] If you earned it, it is yours Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I find myself as being rather 'old school' in my thinking about personnel problems within an another art. My advice to students on an issue such as this is as follows: Am you a member of this system? (no, in my case) If not, then do not worry about political or personnel problems that exist in other martial arts systems. This stuff comes up once in a while. BUT it is not your business. If you have time and energy to worry about the internal affairs of other arts then you should be working harder. Try 500 kicks on each leg. Then do 1000 situps. Then do 500 pushups. If you still have enough energy to worry about arts that are not yours then call me and I'll set up a special program for you. In any case Pak Vic should be treated with great respect as the head of a system. Do not argue with or show disrespect towards this man. I would underscore this last point with my own students. Failure to show respects should be dealt considered a serious offense. Paula also has extremely good technique and flow, and I for one think she can hold her own with most men out there.
