But part of it may help with the recent question wrt the de Thouars' and their arts. Ray Forwarded message: In setting the record straight, I have been reading for years an ex student's fame to claim - Steve Douglas Gartin considers himself my very best successor of the fighting art I have devel- oped. In my most consideration for Steve is that he is not my best student, or the best practitioner in my art. I trained all my senior practitioners, and Iam a better judge to evaluate any of them. I have terminated my associations with Steve Douglas Gartin as his teacher, and him as an extended family member. As a martial arts leader in my own system I need to firmly clarify my situation in the martial arts community. I own it also to all my students for improving constantly my martial arts training in diversed martial arts practices, as I was lucky enough to learn from other experts in their field of practice. Times are changing, and so is the practice in combat. Deeply respecting the art of Serak, the founder, and every one involved who have attributed to the family art. My three brothers Maurice, Paul and Victor, who have been very instrumental in sharing their knowledge of the art throughout the world. Paul and Victor are also creators of their specific systems, Paul created Bukti Negara and Victor Tongkat. Both systems are highly effective, and with my praise! The war amongst the three brothers concerning their infighting it is all about Serak the family art, had gone through passions of history, and lets not forget they are still brothers! Brothers always fight. Still having it on tape, when Paul first came to the State of Colorado, and taught in my best friend's back yard his version of Serak. My friend Wayne Welsh produced the training tape on an 8milimeter film. Later Maurice came and taught my students and associated friends his version of Serak. Bob Orlando and Steward Lauper made the Serak tape in my back- yard. These two men are amongst my most entrusted friends. I have always participated in any of the training sessions, that were conducted by Paul and Maurice. I was never interested in the practice of Serak, I only enjoyed how Serak's teaching has evolved from teacher to teacher. Maurice, Paul and Victor are experts in their fields - without a doubt. I firmly need to clarify my position very strongly, that the way I practice my art, teach my art, and the way in how I move with my art is totally different than any of my uncles, or any of my brothers when they do their arts. The art I practice in decades of valued time is a total different system. To state my position clearly I only progress my monkey boxing, pentjak silat tjimande, pentjak silat tji kampek, and the 5 old ancestory art of fu, jaw, hung, pung, and lung kun tao, a southern Fuekchin kun tao system. Non of the systems I practice relates to any of the arts practiced by my three brothers. There is always relativities in the practice of any martial art. As the mart- ial art society closely watch the ongoing battle concerning the family art of Serak, I must part my ways. I have always been the outsider of the family art, and should be understood where I fit in lue of the situation. I wish all the three brothers the very best, I just need to clarify my position in the matter of speaking. Uncle Willem de Thouars. --__--__-- Message: 2 From: Bladewerkrr@aol.com Date: Thu, 24 Jan 2002 11:37:24 EST To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Re: Eskrima digest, Vol 9 #32 - 7 msgs Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net In a message dated 1/23/02 7:04:22 PM Pacific Standard Time, eskrima-request@martialartsresource.net writes: << Simply said, he has no Serak, is that so hard to accept. One of the problems is that in America, unfortunately advertising ploys sometimes outweigh respect. The solution might be to copywrite the system, as the Dog Brother Martial Arts have done. That way should someone not associated with the system use the name in advertising a product, there would be legal recourse, both to the writer and publisher. Or in this case the person doing the video and the company releasing it. I hate to offer this as a possible solution, as it seems that simple respect for ones teacher would make it unnecessary. But like using a good lock or having a weapon for self defense, it is something that our society seems to make necessary.
