I have never fought in any tournement or dog brothers type matches, but have been practicing TSE Eskrima with guro Richie Ly for a while and we spend a lot of time doing free form sparring (out of the box). This was introduced to me after years of box type drills and Man, what a rush! I'll never go back!! Anyway, If you are referring to the typcial Serrada inside block with the stick against a #1 strike, checking with the C hand, then backnuckling to the body. I have found that Yes, done with the live hand backing up the stick at the strike can stop a full power strike if you don't bounce the stick and yes, I can apply the C hand, but the problem arises with the typical back hand stike that comes next. Unless you are a gorrilla, or have a knife, who are you going to stop with such a move? For the sake of form I use it. But my free style sparring seems to prefer the block, maybe the C hand to check, but I seem to prefer a bill gee to the eyes with the live hand immediately after the initial attack has been stopped, then to fient then close with an elbow strike to the chest with my stick arm and move into an abiniko attack to the head, etc. etc. There are other directions to go, but this is an example only. Would this be, in the opinion many of those with far more experience than me be an effective modification of the cooperative type set-up? Am I on the right track here? Worth, TX Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi Reuden, Tim Waid teaches a Pekiti Tirsia class in the Hurst / Bedford area off 183. I'd strongly encourage working with Tim. (The Harimau Silat mentioned in a previous post is taught around that area as well.) There's a JKD guy, Mike Keller or Kelly (it's been a while). His JKD lineage is Tim Tackett. He dos some Kali, and I know who some of his teachers have been, but I don't know which style/lineage he settled on. There's another gentleman who does Modern Arnis and Hock Hochheim's knife congress in Fort Worth, but he's on this digest and he posted recently. I don't know if he's accepting new students, but if he is, he could post you himself. Drop me a line if you are interested. You can also hit Lang Son Traders on Abrams in Arlington. She keeps a book of different martial arts schools in the area that may not be in the yellow pages. My current pair has (finally) broken and I am in the market for a new pair.
