It is just like words like American Samurai or Street Karate. Think about it. I mean, really think about it. This is just a question, like Marc's above, but is everyone letting their testicles speak for their approach to martial arts marketing? We also make a little contact with the stick on the thumb as we zone in, especially if we are in tight, to slow the strike up a bit. Now for what may be taken for one-upmanship....but it's not meant to be taken that way. Here goes...my teacher is from the old school, and we tested everything for effectiveness (not to imply that anyone else's training is weak, it's just the way we train). We follow through on all our hits, and we know if a block will work or not. We have tossed out a couple of things that have proven to not hold up under pressure (to use one of Rob McDonald's favorite sayings), and the sweep block works fine. Mind you, we hit hard, in order to avoid complacency, and to be sure. Not trying to flex here, just pointing out that good training will tell, and the proof is, as they say, in the pudding. I have used the sweep block in lock and block with Suro Mike Inay, who hit as hard as anyone out there, and against Rob, who scares me sh!%less when he hits, and I have complete confidence in the block. Remember, the block is the first part of the counterattack, and if the block is weak, there is no sense in going any further practicing the counter move...you will already be out. My hands would sting from the force and reverberation from Rob's hits, but I learned how to stop an attack. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net 2nd notice. Thus far two requested and received this change. Anymore? Ray ========================================================================= With the new format of the Eskrima list it is now easy to open subscription up to those that would like a non-digestified version. i.e. the msgs would come individually instead of bunched together in an issue of the digest. The last time we checked into this (a couple years ago) only a handful of people were interested in that. But it is time to check again. If you'd like that type of subscription please drop me a private email at the addr below. Thanks. Thus my comment about the inside sweep also working against a steep #1 instead of just a flat #1. We have to do a bit of real time adjustment to the sweep for a steep #1, but one can still make it work.
