The recent violence signals the growing rift between the two sides. The vice president's political supporters likely see the growing weakness of Megawati and will start to position Haz to take command should she falter. Analysis Violence erupted during a rally Feb. 3 between supporters of the United Development Party (PPP), led by Indonesian Vice President Hamzah Haz, and supporters of President Megawati Sukarnoputri's Indonesian Party of Struggle (PDIP). Leaders on both sides anticipated the clashes and did nothing to stop them, the Jakarta Post reported. The unwillingness or inability of local party leaders and security forces to stop the conflict signals the growing animosity between the two political parties. As recent criticism of Megawati mounts, the Muslim-based PPP is apparently trying to exploit the president's weakness and set up Haz to take over the leadership of the country. Indonesia has had a difficult time following the principles of the democratic electoral system since the removal of former President Suharto in 1998. Suharto's successor B.J. Habibie saw an early end to his term, and Abdurrahman Wahid was ousted from the presidency in July 2001. Now Megawati has hold of the reins of leadership and is doing what she can to survive until the next election in 2004. If she can finish her term, democracy may have a chance in the archipelago. Some, however, would rather take power before it is time for the Indonesian people to choose their leader. The recent violence broke out when the vice president's party held a rally in Yogyakarta, a tourist destination on the island of Java, to celebrate its 28th anniversary. Locals who support Megawati's party, however, became unhappy with the "arrogant attitude" of the marchers, the Jakarta Post reported. According to the eyewitness accounts, the conflict erupted when those rallying banged their motorcycles and jeered at groups of passersby. The violence ended with several people seriously injured and many cars and motorcycles set afire. The Post offered no explanation for the powerlessness of the party leaders to stop their supporters from engaging in such violence. The leaders either chose not to intervene or the crowds were too incensed to follow calls for calm, if there were any. Either possibility would indicate that the two parties are no longer choosing to cooperate with or back each other. And such incidents of political violence in the past have normally happened when the president's position was unstable and an early change in leadership appeared likely. The only development that could have led to such animosity is the increasing national criticism of Megawati. In the past couple of months, Indonesian legislators urged the president during an event to get serious about the reform process, the speakers of the People's Consultative Assembly and the House of Representatives both called her administration inconsistent and Megawati has had to more openly align herself with the military. The PPP may see this as its opportunity to take the presidential torch early, something that could happen if the party removed its support for Megawati and managed to gain the backing of the military. Running Haz as a presidential incumbent would help secure a win in the 2004 election. The party has decided to delay its leadership meeting from 2003 to 2004, most likely to groom Haz to take over the presidency should Megawati survive her term. If Megawati and the PDIP are taken out of the picture, the vice president's party would only have to contend with the Golkar party for the presidency. Golkar, however, is currently suffering from its chairman's involvement in a financial scandal. The vice president's party is no longer waiting in the wings for the president to fall but has decided to take a more active approach to speed both her demise and the assent of their candidate. This new addition to Megawati's growing stack of tribulations will complicate matters as her hold on power becomes more and more precarious. ------------------------ --__--__-- Message: 2 From: Sidney525@aol.com Date: Wed, 6 Feb 2002 04:57:15 EST To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net CC: Sidney525@aol.com Subject: [Eskrima] Armor Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I have been having a hard time to find where to purchase WEKAF type armor. Um, it is within the capabilities of many hackers to sniff packets that contain this message out of an E-mail stream. The risk I'm concerned about is that an E-D member may use that same passwords for other more important business, such as financial accounts. I can turn it on or off, but can't change how it is sent out -if- it is sent out. That is why the following guidance is provided on the subscription page for selecting a password: "Do not use a valuable password as it will occasionally be emailed back to you in cleartext." Given the first password was randomly set for subscribers to the old list I thought it was good to send out at least one reminder. But I can turn the future monthly reminders off if folks think that is best. You may always have your password mailed back to you, via Mailman's interface, if you forget it. A CALL TO ARMS! Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Fellow Filipino Martial Artists, This is a call to arms for all Filipino martial artists; instructors, practitioners and enthusiasts. The Filipino martial arts community has been requested to give representation at the upcoming Arnold Classic 2002 in Columbus, Ohio, February 22-24. I have been appointed as the division director and to date am not receiving the kind of response that I had hoped for. I would like to list just a few of the many reasons and incentives that everyone should be should be knocking down our door to participate, compete and get involved. 1. This event is co-hosted and sponsored by Arnold Shwarzenegger, our other gracious host is Jim Lorimer of Lorimer Productions. If there is any single person who stands as an icon of health, fitness and the multitude of sports that develop these qualities it is Arnold. Arnold’s history in sports, from his early days in weightlifting and bodybuilding to his appointment to the Presidents Fitness Council makes him our planets number one ambassador of athletes everywhere. 2. This is currently the worlds second largest sporting event. We have recently been contacted by the Guinness Book of World Records and we anticipate receiving the status of the worlds largest sporting event next year. The Olympics are currently the worlds largest sporting event with around 10,000 athlete competitors, we have around 9,500 athlete competitors this year 4,000 of which are martial arts competitors. We are confident that we can surpass this number next year. 3. We have been given an opportunity to educate the public and the world about our relatively exotic arts. This event will be covered by Fox Sports who have committed to a prime-time showing of their edited feature on this years expo. The event will also be covered by ESPN, but shown late night. This year, we will also have live streaming video on the internet. Many different martial arts, fitness and other magazines will covering the expo. Scouting agents will be in attendance and some will be chosen for on the spot auditions which could lead to TV, film or commercial possibilities. 4. We can clear up the misconception that Filipino martial arts are only stick-fighting arts by demonstrating various weapons form in single and two-man sets and displaying some of the wide range of self-defense, which, in my opinion stacks up against any of the other world-renowned methods of personal defense. 5. If we can make a good showing this year, I’m sure that we can become a permanent part of this grand and prestigious event. If we can do that together, I envision that this could turn into the worlds largest Filipino martial arts event. 6. There will be over 60,000 spectators coming in from all over the US and some from abroad. 7. This is a very non-political affair where we can all meet many of the other practitioners, masters and grandmasters to share some camaraderie, create new friendships and network. 8. If you like all things asian, there is a fantastic Asian Cultural Fair that is presented as part of the itinerary. We need about 100 competitors in any of the following 4 categories – single-stick, double-stick, forms and self-defense. We also need judges (preferably instuctor rank, referees and volunteers to help with this event. Please help support this event, not for the event itself, not for me, but for the Filipino Martial Arts in general, the FMA deserves it’s place too. Please pass the word to everyone you know. Let us know about any obstacles that stand in your way and we will try to help with some resolution. There are five websites devoted to the Arnold Expo 2002 and they can all be accessed through www.arnoldclassic.com. Contact us ASAP at staff@asianfightingarts.com , or write or call the following: Asian Fighting Arts 5099 Springboro Pike Dayton, OH 45449 (937)293-5520 www.asianfightingarts.com I remain confident that we will receive the support we need.
