From personal experience( as the subject) I can tell you that a wind choke is faster and more reliable and is effective in around 6 to 8 seconds. >> Hi Tom, Don't mean to dispute you, but the judo club I belonged to many long years ago preferred the blood choke, because the recipient was rendered helpless immediately, due to the body spasms the occurred when the carotid arteries are blocked. It only took a matter of about 2-3 seconds to go out with a blood choke, and there was no fighting it, whereas the recipient of a wind choke will have a quite a few seconds longer to struggle before losing consciousness. I have been choked in real life a few times (work), and the blood choke is far more dangerous and potentially lethal; you simply cannot fight back once it is applied. I broke a frontal wind choke once by left-hooking the inmate in the liver; even though I was getting lightheaded and seeing spots, I was still cognizant enough to be able to fight back. If he'd had a good carotid choke on me, I would have stood no chance, even applied from the front. Great fun and highly informative. I highly recommend checking out Pak Vic and Serak (through him or any of his instructors) if you ever have an opportunity. The day was an excellent combination of history, lineage, empty hand and weapons techniques, physics, body alignment, structure and movement. And best of all, just lots of fun and warm friendship. If you ever have the opportunity, check it out!
