Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Great to see so many are involved with "Arjee" (Rey Galang) and the Bakbakan. Both are obviously of high quality. Arjee was also one of many that submitted material to our FMA FAQ. Perhaps you guys can help. A few years ago Arjee asked that we submit a short article to the Bakbakan's newsletter (I forget its name now). The article was was reviewed ahead of time and then submitted with picture. At about that time I stopped receiving my subscription to the newsletter and never heard back from Master Galang. Email or phone calls were not returned. Did the picture prove that we Inayans are just too ugly for prime time? :) Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Mon, 18 Feb 2002 11:03:55 -0800 From: Bill McG To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Blood Chokes Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Just a note about the safety of carotid chokes. I have had doctors who attend my seminars tell me in very strong terms not to allow students over the age of 40 to be choked to any degree. I was told that there was a danger of artial plague disloging and causeing a stroke. Since then, any time I show a choke, I ask those 40 and over to raise their hands and exclude them from receiving the choke during training. My guess is that this was not a problem when many of our teachers were learning chokes. I would think that 40 years ago the average 40 year old full time martial artist in asia had less plague in his artiries then most 20 year olds in the U.S. do today. Perhaps a misunderstanding of this positioning... When one is facing a person w/o a knife of their own, this would be the prefered position as you want to better defend the knife against your opponent's attempt to nullify your weapon. However if your opponent is similarly armed, then the strong side would be forward. Was it something I missed, or has the board been inactive for a while? If I was missed in the mailings, where do I go to get messages from the last week? Jay BTW, does anyone here know about Nene Tortal's changing his style's name from PT to "Dekiti Tisia Wali"? What do you know about Greg Alland and his organization? Galang, Bakbakan International and Kali Ilustrisimo Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Dear Guru John Jacobo, Mr. Salvador and Mr. Riccardi: Thank you, gentlemen, for replying to my recent inquiry. It's nice to see the loyalty you all have for your instructor, Master Reynaldo S. Galang. Please be advised that my intention was not to question his credentials, but primarily to educate myself so that I can find a competent and reputable instructor. I admire and I am very impressed to see how well-respected Master Rey is among the many great GM's of the FMA. I wonder if other individuals, such as yourself, would care to share their own sentiments regarding Master Rey and further attest to his credentials, but who are not from Bakbakan. Presently, I have been practicing FMA for only 6 months, but through informal sessions with friends of mine. It's now time for me to move forward. Therefore, based on what I've read most recently, I definitiely plan on checking out the Bakbakan NAHQ school, and respectfully request your permission to visit. In addition, I hope to meet you all at your tournament and seminar in March. Sincerely, Dan A.
