Filipino empty hand combat is as varied as the different Filipino martal arts, and may emphasize aspects of striking, kicking, grappling, and throwing. Many times it reflects the influence of Japanese, Okinawan, Korean, and Chinese martial arts in the Philippines; western boxing is also incorporated. Sometimes it reflects the indigenous cultural tradition of the art. In some cases it reflects the weapons techniques of given art, most especially knife techniques. In many cases the empty hand art of a system is a hybrid grafted onto the original weapons system. Not only are the empty hand arts very different from each other, but they are given more or less emphasis in different traditions. In my personal experience, the empty hand techiques of San Miguel Eskrima are seen primarily in "Combat Judo" - empty hand against knife. Developing further empty hand arts from the principles of San Miguel Eskrima is currently a work in progress. In comparison, the sophisticated and highly effective empty hand techniques of Pekiti Tersia are an established part of its curriculum (subject to continued interpretation and development). To learn more about the different Filipino empty hand arts you may wish to start with the Eskrima Digest FAQ, and also do web searches using the following key words: Panajakman, Dumog, Sikaran, Yaw Yan, Eskrido, Sagasa. Perhaps your Instructor simply has not shown any to you yet? Anyway, See the Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) FAQ and the online search engine for back issues of the Eskrima/FMA list at http://MartialArtsResource.com The FAQ contains information on many systems that have hand styles within them and so forth. Maybe that can get you started with your research. -- Steve Klement Inayan Masirib Guro www.inayaneskrima.com klement@inayaneskrima.com Inayan Systems International > From: eskrima-request@martialartsresource.net > Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > Date: Wed, 20 Feb 2002 09:26:45 -0500 > To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > Subject: Eskrima digest, Vol 9 #68 - 8 msgs > > Message: 6 > Date: Wed, 20 Feb 2002 00:04:34 -0800 (PST) > From: ray adorna > To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > Subject: [Eskrima] (no subject) > Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > > please bear with me im new to mailing lists, but i was > just curious; im studying eskrima now but im really > interested in empty hand combat. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Quick comment: "campaing reform" as currently written will eliminate free speech for 2 months (?) prior to elections ... but people in the media will be allowed to say/publish whatever they want. As Guro Denny points out, this is way bad, malo muchachos, malo. Whoever is in the media world can influence public opinion to their whims and politics while members of the public and public-minded organizations, etc. will be effectively gagged ... by unconstitutional law snuck in on the coattails of a reform law intended to stop something else. Don't believe me, check out http://www.conservative.org/financereform. Congress needs to hear from all of us. I hope that Ray finds this suitable because the more we know the better we can act. For the first time in over a millennium, time will pass through its second -- and last -- Triple Palindrome event tonight. As the clock ticks over to 8:02PM on Wednesday, February 20th, 2002, time will (for sixty seconds only) read in perfect symmetry. Using military time, 8:02 PM will be 20:02 The 20th of February will be 20-02 In the year 2002. 20:02 20-02 2002 This has only happened once before, over a thousand years ago, on 10:01AM, on January 10, 1001. Herrman" To: eskrima_digest Subject: [Eskrima] NYS bill to certify MA teachers Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hello, The following article appeared in the February 4, 2002 issue of the Democrat and Chronicle newspaper (Rochester, NY). While the proposed bill is bad news it is also upsetting that the school involved is apparently still a member of NAPMA. It makes every school & instructor look bad when our premiere professional organization fails to chastise unprofessional behaviour. Respectfully, Chris H. --- INJURY SPURS BILL TO CERTIFY MARTIAL ARTS TEACHERS The Associated Press ALBANY - The hospitalization of an ex-Green Beret karate student has prompted one state legislator to propose licensing of martial arts instructors. Assemblyman Robert Straniere considers regulating martial arts a commonsense necessity. Since the sport involves "using the body as a lethal weapon," he said, regulation is the only way to ensure safety. "We license people who do fingernails. Why not license these instructors?" said the Staten Island Republican. Though the bill has spurred little interest among lawmakers since Straniere introduced it last March, its opponents are prepared for battle. Martial arts instructors say the bill is an unnecessary restraint on business freedom. They wonder how outsiders would evaluate such a varied and complicated field. "How can they certify us if they don't understand what it's all about?" said Greg Scheurer, manager and instructor at Central New York Karate and Kobudo in Syracuse. More than 1,680 martial arts schools operate across New York - about 14 percent of the nation's total. Only California has more schools, according to the Clearwater, Fla.-based National Association of Professional Martial Artists. "In martial arts, there are tons of different styles. Two Tae Kwon Do schools on the same street could have two different curriculums," said Rob Colasanti, NAPMA's vice president. Matt Dorsey, director of Martial Arts America in Rochester, worries primarily about the bill's vagueness. The two-sentence bill directs the state education commissioner to license martial arts instructors and develop the "rules and regulations necessary for such purpose." Straniere said he is intentionally letting someone else decide the specifics. He put that burden on the Education Department, he said, because many martial arts students are children. "I feel the legislature is not in a position to say what the standards should be," Straniere said. That is precisely Dorsey's point. He will travel to Albany with members of the Libertarian Party on Feb. 12 t meet with legislators to present signatures of people who oppose the bill. "We call for the separation of sports and state," said Richard Cooper, the Libertarian Party's state chairman. The bill stems from the October 1999 injury of David Fusco, now 42. During a class demonstration, instructor Frank Barone Jr. punched the two-month karate student, breaking several of his ribs and puncturing his lungs, said Fusco. The accountant said the injuries left him in critical condition for eight days. A grand jury decided not to indict Barone on assault charges, citing a lack of criminal intent. Barone, a 33-year old black belt, according to his Web site, did not respond to requests for comment. His AVK Karate school - a NAPMA member - still operates on Staten Island. Fusco and Barone are now suing each other in civil court. Fusco said he did not ask Straniere to propose licensing for instructors, though he said it is a great idea. "At least when you do something wrong, you can lose your license. If karate guys had to have a license, they might think a little bit more about their actions," said Fusco. "If you lose your license, you lose your livelihood." --- --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima Old digest issues are available via ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
