Or was it a surprise? If it was a complete surprise how many instructors got knifed, gouged or similar when the student said to himself "I'm gonna die!" --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "al sardinas" To: Date: Thu, 21 Feb 2002 18:18:26 -0500 Subject: [Eskrima] Point Of Stick; Cooperative Training; Empty Hand; Padded Sticks Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Here are my quick thoughts on some recent topics: Point Of Stick In the Garimot System, a hand grip's length of the stick at either end is used to strike in all ranges. The middle of the stick is only effective for blocking. Cooperative Training IMO, all fighting in a controlled environment (tournament, class, etc.) is cooperative training. The only time it is not when it is for real. Even unpadded stick fighting is cooperative. Empty Hand Mr. Ray Adorna, I agree with Inayan Masirib Guro Steve Klement. Every FMA has an empty hand aspect to it, you just have to be patient to recognize it. But to give a plug for Garimot Harimaw Buno, this empty hand system has it roots in the Philippines. It is not a derivative of some Brazilian, Chinese, Japanese or any other system.. BTW, Guro Steve, of all the responses on this subject, your response showed me how much you have evolved in your training. Padded Sticks Mr. Tim Fong, I suggest you try another padded stick configuration for speed. Try rattan and pipe insulation or doodles (water flotation tubes) Or you could try Soft Stik which really aren't that soft. Oh BTW, Ray Terry great new seach engine on your site and thanks for another palindrome. My daughter loves them! "What exactly is the stuff they wave in front of boxers faces and people unconscious in an ambulance or ER?" Is that ammonia? Yes, No, and if so, what is it? It may be difficult to find instructors who are familiar with that section of Guru Dan's system...but they are out there. Most of the instructors that I've seen tend to have a greater knowledge of the weaponry section of the system, which is vast as well. Smelling Salts, aka ammonium carbonate. A colorless-to-white crystalline solid. In a water solution it is sometimes called aromatic spirits of ammonia. Ammonium carbonate is mixed with perfume to create a stimulant. The ammonia fumes from the salts irritate the membranes of the nose and lungs, which triggers a reflex causing the muscles that control breathing to work faster. Or so I read on the web... :) Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com --__--__-- Message: 6 Date: Fri, 22 Feb 2002 09:29:38 +0800 To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net From: Luis Pellicer III Subject: [Eskrima] Lonely Planet guide Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net We are NOT politically unstable. The 65 Throws of Kodokan Judo, from the US Martial Arts Association (http://mararts.org). This is Phil Porter's organization. In 5 volumes. Also, The Counters of Kodokan Judo, from the same person and place. 8 vols in 5 tapes. These tapes have been around for a long time (~15 years?), the quality of the production is not tremendous, but the material in them is excellent. IMHO, Porter does an excellent job in teaching the fine points of each technique or concept. You can watch the throw or the counter, but he has a way of describing the motion or the movement so that you go "Ahhh!". The 65 Throws tapes are each about an hour in length. The Counters tapes are each about 2 hours in length. Lots of good material.
