Her previous training consists of one year of Tang Soo Do when she was about 7 or 8 years old, and her recent Army basic training, which is very limited. If a FMA school is not available there, is there another school known to incorporate occasional FMA seminars or other FMA training? My son and I are relatively new students of Inayan Eskrima under Maserib Guro Steve Klement, Guro Mike Klement, and Katalungan Guro Brad Hill. Our experience in this training can only be described as outstanding. Lots of fun. If I remember correctly, apparently he chokes his son out all the time. At any rate, he did so on this day. As his son was reviving some one asked "Are you OK?" and Gene LeBelle replied "I'm fine." Perhaps there's a message here. At any rate, when they asked for volunteers, I declined. In addition, they usually contain various fragrences (lavender oil, lemon oil, and others) which don't really add to its properties all that much. I remember reading Neil Adam's (former world champ and Olympic medalist) book on jime waza (chokes), that after being purposely choked unconscious, he once threaten to go at an instructor, with a 2x4 in a back alley, if the instructor failed to honour a tap-out again. As a basic safety rule, when someone taps in our dojo, tori (attacker) must GET OFF uki (receiver). This is to prevent situations where the uki is hurt due to actions other than the technique that tori is attempting. For example, tori may think she is choking uki, when in fact, she is breaking uki's arm. In today's world, to ignore a tap-out is beyond stupid. It borders on criminal. Ed ______________ My other AikiJujitsu instructor used to have his instructors deliberately >ignore "tapping out" so we could see how it actually felt to pass out and >where our true limits were. Stupid training practice, but educational >nonetheless. Three seconds to tunnel vision, and two more for me to go out. Very educational. Was this mentioned to the students beforehand? Or was it a surprise? If it was a complete surprise how many instructors got knifed, gouged or similar when the student said to himself "I'm gonna die!" ________________ Yahoo! What about the recent references to "Jailhouse Rock". Anyone know of how it may have influenced boxing? That would be a natural it seems. According to one source it "looks like Silat". Mel Gibson uses it in one of the Lethal Weapon flicks. Mitakuye Oyasin. I don't see the advantage for the giver or the receiver. At some point we can dumb things down so far that we might as well just play videogames and imagine we are actually doing martial arts... >> Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com That is a pretty far stretch from my point. There is not much difference between your training partner gagging and your training partner going out. It the going out I'm against. I know there is a difference blah blah blah I teain and have trained as real as the best, but the key to life (living well and or living long) is a true appreciation of "risk". Ask those who lost real money in the current stock market fall and ask those people if they understand risk a bit better now. Look back at my shooting analogy...notice I did not refer to straws and spits balls as firearm training. Ever seen a real flight simulator? Regards, Carlton H. Fung, D.D.S. There was a time (perhaps still the case?) that one didn't win their Judo 1st Dan unless they had experienced a choke out first hand. Just one of those things you had to experience to 'graduate'.
