We have said that pain was the QUICKEST teacher. The rest of you let me know which version of pain you think is closer to your training philosophy. Pain teaches immediately that something went wrong. It is effective because it is instant and directly connected to what caused it. What it teaches depends on how the instructor and student relate that pain to the GOALS of the class that day, the part of the system it fits into and the system on a philosophical level - don't worry I won't get too geaky on you:) Pain is the quickest teacher, but is 'quick' learning the MOST important thing on the teachers list of goals? If it is - as it may have been during times of strife for our FMA forefathers, obviously the lessons will be set up for fast, furious, intense sessions. I think that, as a whole, our society is a little safer and how quickly a student learns is only one of many factors that a teacher must consider, but not the ONLY one. Some instructors will use Pain to teach prospective students what it takes to be in their class and to deal with a fight. Instructors will also learn from pain, like which students will 'cut it' and which ones won't. Instructors will know what they WANT students to learn, but have very little control over what students will really learn - mainly because each student brings their whole life history to class with them and we, as instructors, don't know the whole story. Pain may accomplish your goals quickly, but what other lessons will a student 'learn' quickly that an instructor didn't consider? Issues like self-esteem, history of abuse/rape/post traumatic stress (yes these are dramatic examples but they are also real) that students may bring with them will influence what a student 'learns' when an instructor applies pain as a 'quick' learning tool. Is it ALWAYS the best tool? I don't think so. Is it an affective learning tool? Very, but only if the instructor is well rounded and tuned in to his/her students and system. I heard a story from a girl who was taking a college self defense course and wanted to continue at a commercial school. She was at her first lesson and when she mentioned that she had some prior training, the instructor asked her how she would get out of a choke, and grabbed her full force right away. He never asked her about medical history, personal reasons for coming to the class or anything - according to her. What lessons did pain teach her about: Self defense/the instructor/herself...? Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I would like to thank those of you that helped me in my search to find Guro Carlito Bonjoc. So many of you sent me an e-mail with his info. I met with him a few days ago. My friends that saw him at the Gathering this past summer in Sacrament Ca. was right, this guy is amazing! The way he maneuvers his weapon for multiple strikes, joint breaks, locks, throws and choking techniques. I've never seen eskrima like this before. I had a great time, he is a wonderful teacher. I will be studying with him on a regular bases. Again thank you. Diego Yahoo!
