I trained for a few months in Inayan Eskrima with a guy I knew only as Gus. I trained in his dorm room. He never told me his full name, but I believe he was an instructor at Four Winds Martial Arts Studio in MIlwaukee. Now to make my point..........I am getting the rattan-induced itch again and would like to find an Inayasn Eskrima instructor here in Central Texas. I am willing to drive any reasonable distance (Dallas, Waco, or Austin). Any help would be greatly appreciated. As a teacher in the public school system I have worked with over 1,000 elementary / middle school students. Some of them have excelled in life, some haven't. Some have ended up in prison. Some now work with me as teachers. (Which is really neat) I couldn't take credit for the successful students any more than the others. How these young teachers work with THEIR students has little to do with me. Nobody can control what a person does with their knowledge. Same concept is true for a baseball coach, basketball, or any other organized activity. These are people, not pottery. In martial arts I have no problem claiming a student that has two left feet. I'm not worried about a reflection to me or to my instructor. That's for others to worry about. I've heard this quote from a wise man once. "Natural ability comes from the Creator." I have known him for 14 years and he can be quite a treasure house of pure technical knowledge, and he has a very unique ability to teach what he knows. If he is in your area he is definitely worth any effort to train with. He's a big reason why I went into Filipino martial arts. I'm maybe one of the few FMA-ers that got into the arts after being exposed to empty-hand (rather than stick) aspect, courtesy of Steve Grody's Unique video series. I had seen FMA stick work before, but the empty hand stuff I saw just clicked with me. I wrote Steve with a bunch of questions, and he was nice enough to write back with some really thoughtful answers. If you have a chance to train with him, I wouldn't miss it. If you don't, there's a good video series out there ...
