I -suspect- this knowledge is more broadly known than we might think, but I have no data to prove or disprove that. >> Funny, but a guy named Gordon R Dickson wrote a book called "Dorsai!" in 1960 and in it he wrote the following... "Are you lecturing me?" interrupted Bright's harsh voice. "I am," said Donal. "It's been my experience that the things people tend to overlook are those they learned earliest and believe they know best." Pg 161 Ace edition 1980 As anyone with a teenager will tell you, when the kid snaps, "I know" you're dealing with anything but. In my time I have seen neck breaks from behind, knifing someone for attempting a punch, multiple slashes when the guy is disarmed, knocking someone down and then stabbing them and saying three times "I don't want to fight you" then beating the hell out of the guy all taught as "self-defense." Now maybe you have walked into far more select and realistic schools than I have, in that case, I'm impressed. Most of the ones I walk into have a habit of saying things "I know what self-defense means" when you bring the subject up...and then they proceed to practice moves that will get them charged with -- and likely convicted of -- manslaughter. That's if they work...but that's another can of worms. Of course maybe it helped that I comped my attorney through one of my knife courses and had him tell me where I was stepping on my dick with the advice I was giving. It's something other instructors might want to consider doing. --__--__-- Message: 3 From: Ray Terry Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Martial Arts & Legal Use of Force To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Tue, 19 Mar 2002 19:01:18 PST Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > Funny, but a guy named Gordon R Dickson wrote a book called "Dorsai!" in 1960 > and in it he wrote the following... > > "Are you lecturing me?" interrupted Bright's harsh voice. > "I am," said Donal. What you learn the first is what you forget last. Or yet another... It may be Mickey Mouse, but if you don't know it, it is VERY important. > Of course maybe it helped that I comped my attorney through one of my knife > courses and had him tell me where I was stepping on my dick with the advice I > was giving. It's something other instructors might want to consider doing. Agreed. I guess it occured in my case in that there was always at least one DA or Assistant DA in most of the dojos/dojangs I've trained in. Yes, including that first Judo dojo in Columbus, Ohio in 1969. Actually, I hadn't thought about it, but even in high school wrestling team practice in 67 and 68. The local DA had wrestled in high school and college and used to come in to workout with us. Funny... his claim to wrestling fame that was he had never been pinned. He wasn't very good, but he had a heck of a bridge and was a bitch to pin.
