Most of the time it is the "ego" and the "pride" that triggers excessive reaction to a perceive attack. When this happen, the thinking process is out the window. You don't think anymore but react. Most of the time verbal arguments get escalated into punching and kicking because of pride and egos. Know yourself and avoid situations where your ego will get in the way of sound judgement >> Ooooohyeah...this is exactly why I so strongly advocate going out and learning all the "weenie -non-macho stuff" (like the legal ramifications, deescalation, negotiation and people skills) instead of just focusing on "slamming and jamming". Those other skills tend to serve as a rational "anchor" to keep you from sliding down that slippery slope you're talking about. Whereas, only perfecting physical skills may, in fact, help you slide down that way. While I know that there is a common perception that martial arts teach self-discipline and control, I make this comment based on the observation of many senior police officers/training officers who commonly agree that it is the young rookie who thinks he can "fight" who is the least likely to seek to deescalate or talk a situation to a peaceful conclusion. --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Fri, 22 Mar 2002 14:11:49 EST From: Musilat@aol.com To: Subject: [Eskrima] Teaching Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Mike, You made some really great points in your response to my post. I can't say that I disagree with any of them. In fact, now that I think about it, I probably should have used the term "performing artist" rather than "preservationist". That term gives the proper credit to those who brilliantly express themselves through the interpretation of art created by others, such as Nureyev(sp), YoYo Ma, Itzhak Pearlman...the list goes on. Thanks for helping to clarify my point.
