I can't say that I disagree with any of them. In fact, now that I think about it, I probably should have used the term "performing artist" rather than "preservationist". That term gives the proper credit to those who brilliantly express themselves through the interpretation of art created by others, such as Nureyev(sp), YoYo Ma, Itzhak Pearlman...the list goes on. Thanks for helping to clarify my point. Those other skills tend to serve as a rational >"anchor" to keep you from sliding down that slippery slope you're talking >about. Whereas, only perfecting physical skills may, in fact, help you slide >down that way. You're most likely to react the way you've been trained emotionally and physically (cf. "Emotional Intelligence" which is featured on NPR's Science Friday even as I write this). The hard part, as always, is figuring out exactly what your students need. Marc and I have butted heads over this any number of times. Some people need more inhibitions against using force, violence, whatever you want to call it. Some need disinhibition. A lot of the Art of teaching lies in making the right choices and tailoring your instruction to serve those ends. Case in point, a lot of martial arts students are, as Guru Plinck puts it, "Young, dumb, and full of come". They want to mix it up, see what they can do, get status and breeding rights by beating up on other guys with more testosterone than brains. If the legal speed limit is 55 they want to redline their engines and need to be taught not to. One the other hand there are ones who have been trained that violence is the worst possible thing that could ever happen. Hurting someone else is always evil. They are tootling along at 15 mph on the freeway and need to learn what the accelerator pedal is for or they'll get squashed. As a teacher you want them to end up in roughly the same place. Physically able to take care of themselves and able to live in civilized society without breaking laws or hurting people without good cause. The same methods and approach won't work for the two extremes. >While I know that there is a common perception that martial arts teach >self-discipline and control, I make this comment based on the observation of >many senior police officers/training officers who commonly agree that it is >the young rookie who thinks he can "fight" who is the least likely to seek to >deescalate or talk a situation to a peaceful conclusion. Apples and pineapples, I'm afraid. You may well be right, but dojo bums and cops don't overlap that much. --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Bill Lowery" To: Date: Sat, 23 Mar 2002 00:02:00 -0000 Subject: [Eskrima] Leo Gaje UK seminar update Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi All, Just a quick note to remind you that the dealine for deposits for the Leo Gaje seminar is just two weeks away - 6th April. Also, the Copthorne Hotel in Newcastle has recently employed two Filipino chefs and I am in the process of arranging a buffet on the evening of 18th May which will consist of traditional Filipino food. The cost will be £15.00 per person, the deadline for payment will be 20th April. Please let me know asap so that arrangements can be made. Further, can any payments be made to myself, and not the club as previously stated, thanks. I have recently started training again in the FMA's and I miss those old beats. Can anyone tell me where I can find and purchase a CD or tape of those driving rhythms? I think they will help me feel a part of it again. Thanks Yahoo!
