Quick mention of a video I just picked up, Early American Judo, Jujitsu & Aikido; Rare footage and photos of Bruce Tegner, Mel Bruno and Kenji Tomiki. The video is about 35 mins of interesting and historical information on early Judo in the US. Much of it focuses primarily on Bruce Tegner and his mother, June. A very brief glimpse of Kenji Tomiki Sensei (Tomiki Aikido) is found as well as Mel Bruno teaching Judo to SAC (Air Force) members based in Japan. It begins with early pics of Kano Jigoro Shihan and the original Kodokan (and the original newer Kodokan). A picture of a 1939 magazine article "Leave This Blonde Alone" featuring June Tegner is shown. The video mentions that June was one of the very first women Judo black belts. I suspect it means one of the first non-Japanese women black belts. Also early ads and placards from June's instructor's dojo, the Chicago Judo School on Michigan Ave are featured dating from 1938 to 1941. Carol (Bruce's sister), Bruce and June are on one program from this school. Pictured is Bruce Tegner's Nidan certificate (6/15/47) from the National Judo Association. Brief footage is seen of Mel Bruno and Tomiki Sensei teaching at SAC. Also Obata Sensei and Nishayama Sensei of the JKA are shown as members of the Japan national Judo team. But perhaps the best part is a complete 1948 film from Bruce and June Tegner on Judo. 30+ brief self-defense lessons are shown including Defense Against Kissing and Defense Against Maniac. :) Also briefly shown is Henry Stone at the Kodokan, an ad with actor/singer Rickey Nelson kicking, stills from the 1954 televised Judo demo on the Arthur Godfrey Show, and Bruce's interest in exploring other arts like Savate and Karate. It ends with the statement that Bruce was "all about Hollywood" which is no doubt true. But for many of us, his early booklets on different martial arts and different aspects of self-defense were all we had in those early days. All in all, interesting to long term martial arts nuts, errr enthusiasts, like me. Available from Amazon.com. What he played really added to the overall vibe. He had CDs available. I'm sure Marc Denny could tell you his name.
