What got me to go to class at 18 isn't what does it for me years later. One of the most difficult things is telling a really good student "I can't give you what you need. So and so would be a much better teacher for you." >>Apples and pineapples, I'm afraid. You may well be right, but >>dojo bums and cops don't overlap that much. >Too bad, they have a lot to learn from each other. Definitely. But when have you met two groups less willing to admit that an outsider has something to teach them :-/ And some of the specialized skills don't translate that well. How many of us use handcuffing technique on a daily basis? And you guys who raised your hands, that's probably more than the rest of us needed to know :-) --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Kyud" To: Date: Sun, 24 Mar 2002 19:01:08 -0800 Subject: [Eskrima] Booklets running out Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Information: Kuntaw ng Pilipinas - Beginners Guide - 16 copies left =============================== Filipino Sword Cane - 29 copies left ============================= Arnis Balite - The "Basic's" of Huli Lusob {Capture - Trap - Attack}- Just printed 50 more copies http://www.arnisbalite.com ================================ Kuntaw ng Pilipinas - 'Maya - Silangan - Singkilan - 33 copies left ====================== Good deal if you go to http://maharlikapublication.tripod.com When these are gone they are gone. William (Harry) Thompson was found on Friday. Unlike the other two court officers (Thomas Jurgens and Mitchel Wallace), Capt. Thompson's body was intact when recovered, which I would think will be some consolation to his family. I was told by court academy staff that the other two officers were identified by the finding of one crushed shield and the steel slide from one officer's Glock pistol (fire having melted the rest of the firearm). What was called "remains" in the news, the academy staff referred to as "bits of organic matter". They were hopeful that the condition of the remains would still allow for DNA testing to be done. After I posted a message in which I used the words "Taliban scum", I received several emails reminding me not to feel bitterness against the people of Afghanistan. I don't. I chose my words very carefully in that post. If I were speaking about WWII, I would hope that I could safely use the phrase "Nazi scum" and not be assumed to be painting the entire German people with the same brush. Notice that I wrote "Taliban scum", under whom the Afghan people have suffered much. I happen to have a student of Afghan descent in my class. He is a fine young man whom I have absolutely no hesitation teaching anything in the Pekiti-Tirsia system to. He told us that the horrors you hear about on the news concerning how the Taliban have terrorized the people of Afghanistan is only the tip of the iceberg. Just as in the case of the Gulf war, I'm sure more will come out after the war ends. It is not an entire people I am angry at, it is specific persons who have made specific violent attacks against my country that I would like see blown straight to hell. He has several CD's out, all of which are very good. Also, for a more natural hand drumming sound, try an artist named Guem (I think based in Paris). Thanks to Stephane Fernandez for turning me on to him! Jim McGrath is also a good choice, and Scott Fitzgerald does some nice Native American rhythms. Most of these are available at nature-type stores. Hope this helps. He was the drummer for the Grateful Dead and has done some solo projects like "Planet Drum" ... excellent stuff. They are great! Thanks to all the folks who sent me feedback about them. So far I've used them in class for drills and for limited hand target sparring. It is definitely a faster game than the padded sticks. I like it. I just wish that I'd done this a long time ago--I found it difficult at first to strike the hand with power, because I'm so used to either pulling the shot or barely making contact. Everyone that has used them in my class, including our instructor, Elrick has found hand target sparring with rattan to be a blast. The only problem is that, of course, sometimes you miss the hand and hit the forearm instead (or get smacked on the forearm yourself). However, it's not the total fight stopper that I used to think it would be either. I think I just need to hit harder. I can see, though, that maybe it is better to have good accuracy to hit the exposed bones, i.e. elbow, wrist, hand. Now we're talking about buying the WEKAF armor (which is shockingly expensive!), after we get used to hand sparring. I went through the archives and read some exchanged by Guros Crafty and Bisio about using WEKAF as tool rather than as an end and I think that's what I want to do. thanks again, Tim Fong _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima Old digest issues are available via ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
