Widely regarded by other masters as the best drummer in West Africa (which is saying a HELL of a lot) his stuff always gets the Silat class moving and much more rhythm aware. --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Mon, 25 Mar 2002 18:37:08 -0800 (PST) From: John Oliver To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Drumming/Training CDs Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Thanks to everyone for responding to my post. Once again this digest has shown to have genuinely helpful people who are always eager to provide any knowledge or information they may have. I even received a response from "prettykitty" (Cindy Denny) herself. The consensus seems to be that the CDs by Brent Lewis are the ones I should purchase. Once again, thanks to all. John G. As a person I have yet to meet him. Guro Rutano as an instructor, well I am hoping to relocate to Calgary one day and at such a time I will not hesitate to beat down his door and beg or bribe my way into his class. I have seen his students as a group in California in 96 at the Weakaf event in Carson City and to a person they were behaving in a manner which was beyond reproach. I am sorry I don't have a firsthand reference for you, for me the recommendation of Guro Louie Lindo (search his name on google) is enough. In a shameless plug for my neighborhood, we have some pretty talented instructors on this side of the line and the exchange rate is unbelievably flattering for you guy's south of the line. C'mon up Also the music that people are talking about, I think Guro Cass Magda's wife/partner, no offense, also makes the same kind of music. I was told the style was called "kulmintang", not sure about the spelling. Again the man I mentioned above Guro Louie Lindo had a tape he used to play with some pretty funky toonz on it, kind of tribal and eerie, but great to work out to. They are surprisingly light, thin, and durable---but effective. I've used mine for five years and they still have plenty of wear left in them. Many instructors have also had my fellow students and me use them for knife work. You can learn to slash the forearms hard without injuring your partner.
