The use of abaniko strikes (fanning), constant checking, and highly effective reversing and passing techniques makes Serrada a very powerful system. **Filipino Martial Art of Self-Defense Stick Fighting Seminar** WHEN: Saturday, April 27th 2002 WHERE: Santa Barbara Martial Arts Academy 2610 De La Vina St. Santa Barbara, CA 93105 (805) 687-7488 ~ Michael Mac Donald TIME: 9:30 AM Registration & Check-In ~ 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Class Instruction (1hr break) COST: $40.00 per person (group of 4 or more) – pre-register on or before April 15, 2002 $50.00 per person (individual) – pre-register on or before April 15, 2002 $50.00 per person (group of 4 or more) – pre-register on or before April 22, 2002 $60.00 per person (individual) – pre-register on or before April 22, 2002 After April 22, 2002… $80.00 per person cash only accepted at the door. * Pre-registering is strongly advised. * Due to risk of injury, a liability waiver must be signed at check-in. Well, I have heard of them, and also am in a school that teaches the self-defense style. It is definitely not a MA in the traditional style of forms and Ki and such, but it is a great way to learn self-defense moves that are natural to the body's own reactions and motion. There are no complicated techniques to learn. Instead of the years it takes to learn how to use your MA on the street since most MA take decades to really assimilate all the skills into reactions, KM takes 6-12 months to become familiar enuff to use in real life, and 4-6 years to become fairly proficient. You focus on combatives, jabs, crosses, hooks, uppercuts, and front, roundhouse, side and back kicks, and leave it to that as to fancy stuff. Lots of fun, really high energy and good sweaty workouts. Krav Maga "Contact Combat" lives up to its name. It is a system devised by a Jewish guy to train the Israelian army in combat quickly. The army at the time, after WWII, was composed of mostly non-fight experienced men and women, who did not have years to learn how to fight. I have been in 3 different MA and would have to say that KM is a much easier system to learn if all you want is self-defense. It is also a good compliment to MA as you can focus on the more esoteric, internal aspects of MA while learning how to protect yourself. Thank You!!!!!! --__--__-- Message: 6 From: "Steve Yarnall" To: Date: Sat, 30 Mar 2002 20:37:07 -0500 Subject: [Eskrima] RE: Krav Maga Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net J., My instructor (Hanshi Bill Rankin) has incorporated a lot of the Krav Maga techniques into our self-defense. It has proven to be quite effective because of its simplicity - doing movements that come natural and being rather compact. Our school does not profess to be experts at the style, but we have managed to integrate a good bit and been rather successful. Hope this helps some. Take care Steve Yarnall Message: 1 Date: Thu, 28 Mar 2002 22:02:59 -0800 (PST) From: Thaing369 To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Krav Maga Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Greetings Everyone; I'm not sure if this subject was a point of discussion in the past...but has anyone heard of or at least explored in depth the fighting system of "Krav Maga". I'm sure most of you have heard of it...but I would be interested in comments and/or experiences anyone may have with this unique fighting system...good or not so good. J. Yahoo! To: Date: Sat, 30 Mar 2002 22:25:29 -0500 Subject: [Eskrima] Krav Maga Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Thaing369 asks for input on Krav Maga. My exposure is quite limited. I've got the 5 video series. What I do like is that they hit hard, fast and repeatedly with allot of aggressive attitude. I do feel however that there are better, more efficient and realistic methods and self defense techniques available than what is presented on their tape series. For example someone with a background in southeast Asian martial arts whether silat or FMA, will be sorely disappointed in the knife defenses presented. I could go on but you get the gist. On the otherhand if you value $ /commercialism, e.g. am looking to add a self defense class at the healthclub type scenario, then it may be it's just what you after. The organization seems dead-on ready in that regard. MA is not my livelyhood and for me in anycase the preservation instinct is higher ;) Regards, Travis --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima Old digest issues are available via ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
