Research your own truths. Absorb what is useful. Discard what is useless." Ray Terry Good points Ray. I was in London the other year when Rick Young asked Guro Inosanto how long one should train in a technique before rejecting it and he reckoned about 3 - 6 months. However he has also said that while rejecting it bear in mind that it may come more relevant at a different stage in your life. What you may reject when you were more athletic may become suitable when those knees creak more! Travis said: What I truly think is great about the JKDC "clan", if you will, is that because of their openness they have an awesome symbiotic relationship with a multitude of excellent martial arts AND martial artists - they all grow because of it, or at least the potential is there. ....... Mass acumlation is not what it is all about. The problem with clans is that they can become cliques and therefore blind at times. I agree with your sentiments and found the thrill of what you talk about many years ago, however some of the current greats were at one point facing ridicule because they bucked the trend. I know Rick Young was - in his early 80's LA trips - ridiculed for wearing a gi by some who later on had to put them on to train with the Gracie or Muchado families. I guess where ever you are there are the inspired and the ones who like to wear their clothes. One group may not have it all but some groups do go down a one way lane. Some seminars are better attended for the certificate or tee shirt priority than the seminar with the task master who will actually make you fight. This isnt exclusive to any one group and no group should be berated for having that in its ranks. Some of the greatest artists of our time were rebuked while they were alive. I have had the pleasure of speaking to a Krav Maga instructor in Finland (another country that trains KM) via email. He commented to me that the higher level stuff is much more direct, straight to the point, and contains less wasted motion. He commented on the knife work and said that they teach an entire course in knife fighting and knife defence in Finland. Thanks J Bays > For example > someone with a background in southeast Asian martial arts whether silat or > FMA, will be sorely disappointed in the knife defenses presented. --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Mon, 1 Apr 2002 08:12:14 -0800 (PST) From: ken jo To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Re: Tres Puntos and Dos Puntas Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net To: Gat Puno Abon "Garimot" Baet Laguna Arnis Fedration International US Harimaw Buno Federation Hilot Research Center USA Maraming salamat po sa inyong paubaya tungkol sa Tres Puntos. If I am given the opportunity to go to Batangas someday, I will definitely look for this art. Dos Puntas is a four-inch weapon usually fashioned from carabao horn (hence 'Dos Puntas' - two points), today it looks like a very harmless and decorative souvenir item usually sold in souvenir shops in the Philippines. Sometimes it is also made of wood (e.g., kamagong). A student who knows the various principles in using the stick can use this for striking techniques toward specific nerve areas. It is a very deceptive weapon which can be used by ladies. (One can always say that it is a souvenir item from the islands). I think the nearest similar weapon that comes to mind is the Kubota (if I'm not mistaken). Anyway, maraming salamat ulit. Yours truly, Kenjo - Kali! Yahoo! Although anywhere in Colombia South America will be appreciated, I am concerned more with the cities Bogota and Cali for right now.
