This is one area that will give you an advantage over an opponent that does not practice disarm. Saying that the chances of pulling off a disarm is less than 1%, therefore don't waste your time practicing it is wrong. This is just like saying to jiu-jitsu and aikido practitioners to stop practicing your joint locks, because the chances of you catching punches and kicks in the air is less 1%. Remember that before even attempting a disarming technique, you must hit your opponent to soften him up or as a distraction. Remember also that "all techniques will work" and "all techniques will fail". There are far too many variables that will dictate the effectiveness of a technique in a given situation. The main thing is to be able to flow to the next one, in case one fails. All the different areas of training in the FMA is beneficial in your growth as a martial artist. All the weapons training will be beneficial to your empty hand skills. However... a) if your attacker doesnt respond to reason b)your hand ends up in a familiar place (because of your training of disarms) while defending an attack c)you cannot evade in any way d)you are fairly sure you are going to be killed... it is quite safe to say that knowing how to disarm isn't a bad idea. Besides, I like to think that my training is done to find answers to any potential problems, no matter how minute the chances of occurence. Your thoughts please. I have no problem with it being part of a training syllabus. My question has been, I think, should we really spend that much time practicing a skill that is unlikely to be useful. Or perhaps spend additional time practicing skills with a higher degree of possible applicability? I realize fully that this may not be well viewed here in the FMAs where such skills are very frequently practiced and written about. The question is, is that wise? As my teacher (Suro) said, answer the questions but also question the answers. I am simply questioning a standard FMA answer... ??? Thoughts from others?
