These are the Force Recon Philippine Marines who despite modern firearms still find that bladed weapons are a reality in Jungle warfare. Kudos to Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje for teaching our Filipino warriors to help fight terrorism , who's system has been in place to teach the Force Recon Battalion and now has been shared with the U.S. Troops in the Philippines during joint military training in the Philippines. I tend to think that in most cases though, lower level thug types probably won't get too into practicing their flow drills and footwork. Criminals on the terrorist level are an entirely different animal as their long term goals require more of a commitment. I was under the impression that the Vietnamese > were formidable > gurerrila fighters. Comments ? Yes, the North Vietnamese were very tough and our servicemen learned a lot about unconventional warfare and foriegn internal defense from them. However, this is probably the wrong forum to discuss whether our SpecOps community was succesful or not in completing their mission in Vietnam and why they were succesful or unsuccesful. Thats quite a complex situation to analyze. That conflict left such an impression on the minds of our military commanders that our military analysts compared the Russian occupation in Afghanistan as equal in difficulty as our involvement in Vietnam. Indeed, our military analysts (and some media military analysts) compared our current Operation Enduring Freedom and routing the Taliban as potentially a new Vietnam. This was before we actually initiated our air warfare campaign last year in Afghanistan. Lucky thing for us the Taliban were like the Iraqi Army in the sense that we overestimated their strength and willingness to "fight to the death" like they had proclaimed to the world media before we set foot in either country. It hasn't been bloodless, but it hasn't as publicly distasteful as Vietnam. Anyway, better stop my comments before my ignorance of modern politics begins to show. Yahoo! You seem to understand what virtually all bouncers don't. Talking is good. I spent some time bouncing in a seedy strip bar in a tough L.A. neighborhood and talked my way out of nearly every situation I was confronted with (as I described in another now-infamous post). Strip bars are different from regular bars in that the doorman is the enemy (because he protects the ladies) of the customer, not the other customers. Actually the ladies can be the doormans worst nightmare in that context because they quite often try to hide behind you after they have tormented the customers. Anyway. Here are a few tips for doormen: 1) If you have to eject someone, take him aside to do it so as not to humiliate him in front of his friends. 2) Sometimes it is best to ask a more sober friend of the offending customer to "take care of your buddy" or "bring him back on another night". Sometimes letting him, or his friends know that he is not "86d" for good can keep things from getting crazy. 3) If you are dealing with gang members, at least make them feel like you respect them. The words "respect" and "disrespect" are big to these types. Don't show disrespect towards them if you can avoid it. Sometimes prefacing your approach with "i don't mean any disrespect" can help you to keep the peace. 4) Be aware of empty beer bottles at the bar (good weapons). If the customer has one in his hand, rub your chin (or something like that)while you talk so you have a hand up to cover yourself. 5) This one is HUGE. Try to be friendly towards customers (particularly if they are gigantic) when they come in. If they feel that you are a cool person, they might a) have your back if things get ugly or b) be less likely to cause trouble if they like you. Prevention is key. 6) Giving the impression of authority is important for sure, but try to avoid too much of the confrontational crossed-arm posture if you can. This invites people to test you. 7)Drunks like to shake hands...a lot. If this happens, be prepared to pull on the hand of the arm you are shaking if he tries to punch you with the other hand. If you pull that hands shoulder towards you, the other hand won't be able to reach you. I hope this stuff helps.
