This section also includes: Bow and Arrow (pana), Blowgun (sumpit), Sling, and Slingshot. I do agree that the right to privacy has been recklessly used in the matter of abortion, but that does not mean that there is not a right to privacy. For the 9th to be meaningful, it MUST find rights not specifically listed >elsewhere. > We are in complete agreement here. Didn't mean to give the IXth short shrift, rather, I was trying to avoid my penchant for writing term papers. My politics are pretty Libertarian--Neo Anti-Federalist would probably be the best tag--and I certainly believe in a right to privacy; I just abhor the way this right was narrowly extrapolated to protect abortion rights and little else. My experience is that most feminists and other defenders of abortion rights don't have a lot of use for the IInd, IXth, and Xth amendments, preferring instead narrow interpretations of the Constitution pertaining to their sacred cows. Better watch out or I'll start rattling on about John Marshall and "incorporation" . . . . There is a weight of opinion behind the old boy and I wish him all the best. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Compared to reality-based systems, hybrid systems, street-fighting, etc. what do fellow readers think a martial art is? Do you think reality-based systems are martial arts? Can all fighting-based physical activity be considered martial arts? What about martial arts that aren't considered fighting arts (I have heard some people define Tai Chi as a martial art yet at the same time proclaim that Tai Chi isn't practiced for the purpose of honing fighting skills). Be advised that I am not asking this question because of any prejudice I have for or against martial arts or any other type of system. I am just trying to derive a definition or martial arts for myself with help from our readership. Comments? LAUNCH - Your Yahoo! I use a Wittgenstein-ian Family Resemblance theory- They may not all look exactly alike, but you can see enough of a resemblance among them to realize they are from the same family. Each person will have their own priority of which qualitites are most important, but in the end all the martial arts/sports/training will draw from the same pool. > What about martial arts that > aren't considered fighting arts (I have heard some people > define Tai Chi as a martial art yet at the same time > proclaim that Tai Chi isn't practiced for the purpose of > honing fighting skills). Wouldn't call Tai Chi a martial art at all, but I am comfortable calling Tai Chi Chuan a martial art, even if not one I may find myself likely to practice.
