I''ve been following the digest for a couple of weeks now, with great interest in the exchange of ideas. I''m a beginner in arnis/eskrima (Doce Pares System), took some private lessons from a very good instructor in California. I also practice the Tai Chi Chuan --- since 1989, especially became serious about it after my private lessons from an excellent Chinese Master in Chicago. Tai Chi Chuan is an internal system (gentle and slow) and Kung Fu is the external system (fast and hard). Many books written on Tai Chi Chuan considered the system as an ancient Chinese forms of exercise and martial arts. Since 1990, I've been sharing and teaching people the art of Tai Chi Chuan as part of the Meditation and Stress Management classes that I give. In some instances, when I am asked, I show to the participants the ways to apply or use (this time with force) the simple movements in Tai Chi Chuan on how to protect (not just defend) themselves or their lovedones in situations when their lives are in danger. My former instructor in Arnis/Eskrima suggested to me to apply the movements of Tai Chi Chuan in my practice of Arnis to "enhance and expand" its (arnis') effectiveness. Regards & Peace and everything good! If I dont care what the governing laws are in this area why on earth would I bother myself with what some other individuals belive? Calling 911 is not home protection. I cant imagine anyone thinking that it is. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Can we elaborate on what a martial art is too each of us? I know many people join martial arts for several different reasons, rather it be for self knowledge, for healing, for a hobby, But most of the reasons behind joining a Dojo/Dojang/Kwoon/School or what have you, is to learn self defense or learn how to fight. Anymore I tread real lightly when I hear the term "SPORT" Martial Art. Can we honestly say that perhaps in the future the Sport world of martail arts will harm the profile of what martial arts has been to what it is becoming. Why I am stating this is what I've noticed especially around here where I live IND. You join a martial arts school its almost immediatly they want you to join thier orginization to support the school, they immediatly start training you for the sport side chasing tournaments around the country and you have no real say so in it if you want to continue learning. Very little time is spent in the schools anymore on learning self defense. You train for competition, you train for your next promotion thats basically it. Why I have brought this up is that years ago when I started Karate it was something you had to work hard for to earn a rank. And you had to perform self defense and anymore the ranks are handed out all you have to do is run a set # of Kata, and spar to maintain points. I always have to defend myself when talking about martial arts as to when people say OH you do Karate, Ohh Im scared your a black belt, I have to correct them and say no I dont practice a Sport Karate or TKD I do a combative system called Kali/Escrima. And then one thing leads to another and I have to show them what it is. And then you finally get this " whoa I never knew that was a martial art " Well this is why Im afraid anymore the whole profile of the future of martial arts is falling apart due to the mcdojo's and the whole sport aspect of martial arts. Can anyone else elaborate or give an opinion here? I dont want to step on any toes, or sound assanine, I just am curious if Im the only one out there that feels the same way. Thanks Cory B. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Just happened to catch part of the US Open ISKA Breaking Championship, Heavyweight Division, on ESPN. One of the fellows breaking was Vincent Milo of "Philippine Kuntaw". A big boy. Just wondered if any of our Kuntaw brothers knew Vincent. No particular reason, just asking...
