There is a report of a store owner/employee shooting two armed robbers with a "legally-held firearm". Two other similar reports are reviewed. In only one case was the owner charged, the charges were later dropped. The discussion that follows the article is interesting with opinions approximately 20:1 in favour of shooting as a form of self defense. It appears that in the Czech republic possession of a hand-gun is permissible for the purpose of self defense. I was told two years ago that the laws were relaxed in response to proliferation of armed robbers. It is still difficult to get the firearms permit (medical evaluation, a firearm handling course and an exam is a pre-requisite and the firearm must be registered) but that it is possible at all is interesting (cf. Canada, where possession of a firearm for the purpose of self-defense is not allowed, in fact keeping a loaded firearm in one's dwelling is illegal). Another interesting tit-bit: When I asked about knife laws (note mandatory eskrima content!) I met with blank stares. The general reply was: "What knife laws? You can carry anything you want *as long as it is concealed*. Don't want to upset people!" There is an interesting twist in their law: If you knife someone, you must provide them with medical assisstance. http://praha.idnes.cz/praha_krimi.asp?r=praha_krimi&c=A020521_222604_praha_k rimi_itu&l=1&t=A020521_222604_praha_krimi_itu&r2=praha_krimi Mike Koblic, Campbell River, BC [demime 0.98e removed an attachment of type application/octet-stream which had a name of praha_krimi.aspr=praha_krimi&c=A020521_222604_praha_krimi_itu&l=1&t=A020521_222604_praha_krimi_itu&r2=praha_krimi.url] --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Kyud" To: Date: Wed, 22 May 2002 06:17:31 -0700 Subject: [Eskrima] Puget Sound, Washington Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Have a student moving to Puget Sound, Washington. Master Giron's dedication to the Filipino martial arts will long be remembered and with his art resting in the hands of Master Antonio Somera, the master's art is sure to be continued. The last few years have seen so many great masters of the Filipino martial arts pass away including grandmasters Antonio Ilustrisimo, Remy Presas, Edgar Sulite and now Leo Giron. With the passing of such highly respected masters, it highlights the importance of recording the teachings of the masters while they are still with us. --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Wed, 22 May 2002 11:50:34 -0700 (PDT) From: Enoch Carlton To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Sorrow Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Our deepest sympathy to the Family, Friends & Students of Leo Giron.
