To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Thu, 23 May 2002 16:33:11 +0000 Subject: [Eskrima] God Bless, Uncle Leo Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net It's been a difficult and sleepless week of my life after a 7-day hospital stay for my mother from heart related illness. To then happily return her back home and then to hear of the passing of Grandmaster Leo Giron due to heart complications. Life is such that when a trajedy befalls us, time doesn't lapse as quickly as it once had. We find ourselves in a mesmerized state of contemplative unattachment & retrospection, searching for that which really matters in this short period that we call our life. In these times of sorrow I've reflected on those who have provided me great assistance in my journey. Not only am I grateful to my own family, such as GM Ramiro Estalilla's sister Pacita keeping vigil over my mother & father, but now I find myself most grateful to my Stockton Eskrima gayyem: John Fortes, Al Talaro & David Reyes. If it were not for them, I would have never heard about their reknown instructors & friends in Stockton namely: GM Angel Cabales, GM Rene Latosa, GM Dentoy Revillar, Master Jimmy Tacosa, Master Johnny Eliab, GM Mike Inay, GM Leo Giron, (the list goes on...). It was John Fortes who introduced me to Tatang Leo's system via a 1970's video footage. We studied the tape to no end. I asked John how he came about the footage and he replied that both his father & Tatang Leo were members of the same fraternal organization: Legenario del Trabajo (of which GM Tony Somera is also a member of) & footage was taken at the LDT lodge. Once again, fortune had struck in my my "Eskrima journey" as my father was as well a dedicated member of LDT. When asked of my father, he knew Tatang Leo for many years, but did not realize that he was an Eskrimador. Only when I showed him pictures from Guro Dan Inosanto's book did he believe that his ong time fratenal brother indeed knew the art that they had both trained separately in Ilocos/Pangasinan. It was then that my father approached his old friend at a convention, providing the introduction to which Manong Leo invited me to train with him. Although the travel distance was not conducive to a training schedule, I did correspond with Manong Leo by telephone and met him personally at the 1979 Eskrima Championships held in San Jose, CA. In 1981, I travelled with Grandmaster Ramiro Estalilla to Stockton where we were accomodated graciously by Manong Leo, Manang Alberta & members of the Bahala Na Club No. 1. One of the first things which struck me about the Grandmaster was his articulation of the English language. I remember to this day upon meeting him, (because of his title & stature as a Grandmaster), he questioned if the newer students travelling with us expected to see perhaps a "Shaolin Monk" or perhaps a "Mutant Ninja Turtle". It was the dignified manner in which he carried himself (forged by years of conflict in WWII) that most impressed me. I could listen to Manong Leo for hours. His stories captured my attention, both providing endless entertainment & education. I found myself caring less about watching him wield a weapon, finding it more important for me to grasp what it was historically & motivationally, that led up to a person becoming an accomplished and distinguished Martial Artist. Of GM Giron, I would tell my students & colleagues,"to just listen...& learn". I was equally impressed by his humility and low keyed assurance. He reminded me so much of my father & uncles that it was so very comfortable & natural to be in his presence. I remember him asking,"How is Pablo & Mariano? (my father & his brother). He blew me away when he told me that he remembered me as a toddler & that he had stayed at our home during a LDT function so many years ago! Note: during this writing, I received the phone call from GM Ramiro Estalilla having heard about Manong Leo. This has brought on more recollections of the relationship between the Kabaroan and the Giron Arnis Group. We spoke of how several weeks ago, GM Ramiro & I had planned visiting Manong Leo in Stockton this summer. In the words of GM Estalilla,"Old soldiers never die..." In the late 1980's the relationship grew to joint seminars conducted by GM Ramiro & GM Leo. What I remember most of Tatang Leo were his small attention to detail followed by a Physicists rendition of why. For example, the nuances of a grip change to the proper positioning of your lead foot. I remember how his illness' may have imperceptably slowed him down, but contrary to the wishes of his wife Alberta, he would still be willing to make the effort and show us his Escrima. I was happy for him when widespread achknowledgement was given him through articles appearing in magazines (as Guro Dan Inosanto wrote) when he "received ink". I was so happy when he was honored by Los Angeles' Mayor Tob Bradley as one of the "Living Legends of Filipino Martial Arts" and also when he graced the 2001 cover of "Martial Arts Presents...Filipino Martial Arts" magazine. In the short span of my life, I've been blessed by God to learn under the tutledge of some wonderful instructors who have in turn sadly passed away. Not only have I felt the loss of my teachers: Guro Ted Lucaylucay & Professor Remy Presas, but so has the Martial Arts world. The passing of GM Leo is yet another sad time of our beloved Martial Arts. On behalf of the Espejo family, the Estalilla family and the Kabaroan Association, we offer our most heartflet condolences to the family & friends of Grandmaster Leo Giron. The legacy he leaves us with, is that the world is a better place due to his contributions, insights & inspiration. He represented the potential pinnacle that many of Filipino descent could aspire to be. We pray for the continuing strength of GM Tony Somera & the Bahala Na Club. We pray for Manong Leo as he reunites with his beloved Alberta. It will be a long drive home from Stockton for me & Manong Ramiro. To add to my brother David Reyes' most elegant passage: Apo, isu ti maestro mi. As Tatang always ended his letters...God Bless, Uncle Leo. My sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and students. I met Leo back in the mid 70's. I feel very fortunate to have worked out with him at that time. I also enjoyed listening to his WW2 stories. He was a man of honor and integrity. His memory to me will remain alive in the film I have of our work outs. He has passed but will not be forgotten. These days it is sometimes difficult to distinguish the true masters from the charlatans of the world. In his case, the simple fact that his art kept him alive in real combat is all the proof that anyone will ever need to know that he was among the truest of masters. I never had the good fortune to study with the man, but I did have the good fortune to experience his art through some of his students. My condolences to his family and students. He will be missed.
