Its just not reasonable to expect an instructor to cover hall rental and insurance out of his own pocket and students understand and accept that this is just the way things are in the modern martial arts world. I have had the opportunity to have free sessions, discounts etc. but I only think it fair to pay them for their time and effort to instruct me. Over the last 16 years I have been instructing students from my backyard, in seminars, to a well run part time school that is growing quickly. We offer 1 1/2 hr classes, 3 different martial arts programs, as well as hosting seminars of various martial arts Instructors. I also work a regular job as a Research Scientist for a major Bio Tech company(In the beginning I feel most instructors should have a regular paying job to fall back upon, just in case...). I have seen many schools that run in the red, some in the black, most struggle everyday to stay open. I have no problem charging students monthly training fees, ($55.00 - $65.0/month) or even testing fees (in our tradtional Japanese art $25.00/rank up to Black Belt). I don't understand the reasoning not to charge an appropriate fee for your time and efforts. I love the martial arts, I continue to train and grow in many areas, I help my students when they have trouble with payments, finding jobs, schooling etc. Many Martial arts practitioners look to the past and say "the old teachers or masters, didn't charge their students..." well that is really not true. Teachers from the 1600's in Japan, were paid a stipend by their ranking officials to train soldiers, they also accepted payments from their students and kept many records to this effect. Chinese arts were no different, I know of several prominent Filipino martial artist who make their living through teaching. We could even look at the European arts and see the many schools of the sword that flourished, teaching the arts. I feel that the martial arts can be a career choice, not an easy path, which is why so many fail to make a profit. What really makes the difference is the integrity to your art, offerring quality instruction to your students, charging reasonable rates, having fun and enjoying what your doing is just the by product(and a good one at that). Looking forward to hearing the replies. Maxey Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte issued Thursday a stern warning to the United States government, in particular to Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, never to interfere again with Davao City's peace and order affairs. If ever FBI agents again conduct operations within his jurisdiction, Duterte said he would have them arrested. "That metal (FBI badge) is nothing to me. I would even make them eat it," he added. "I address this to the Americans. They better not do it again. If they do so, I will arrest them," an irked Duterte said in Thursday's joint Regional Peace and Order-City Peace and Order Council meeting at The Marco Polo Hotel. Duterte was referring to the incident last week when FBI agents arrived in the city unceremoniously and took hotel blast suspect Michael Meiring from the Davao Doctors Hospital without informing local policemen. Meiring was severely injured in an explosion believed to be of his own making inside the Evergreen Hotel last May 16. Police suspected that the cause of the explosion was dynamite. Duterte said Meiring was taken from the city and brought to Manila without his knowledge and authority. Police also did not know of the incident until Meiring was gone. Days after the incident, the mayor heard that the FBI came back to the city to arrest somebody, exasperating him some more. According to him, FBI agents should have extended fundamental courtesy to city officials. "Later on, I learned that nobody in the city was informed. I don't care about the FBI," an angry Duterte said in the meeting. Duterte also castigated the National Government for what happened, saying there were "morons" in Manila who participated in the whisking of Meiring from the city. "Sovereignty does not come cheap," Duterte stressed. --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Thu, 30 May 2002 10:18:06 -0700 (PDT) From: rich parsons To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Charging for instruction Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi To all, Well, the club I train and teach at is a co-op. I have four students. This pays the rent for the mat time I use. This is all I care about. I get to train and the students get to learn. Even I get to learn ;~). How do I survive, well I have a full time job that pays all my bills and gives me a little for fun also. Is it wrong for people to charge more or going rates to students? No, if this is what they them selves are trying to accomplish. To make a living from the martial arts. Hopefully the instructor can keep the level of knowledge in his/her students high ;~). Also, if student does not wish to pay the going rate, there is almost always some instructor that accepts work or trade for payment, as mentioned by others here on the ED. This is a FREE society, that allows the student / customer to go elsewhere if they so deem. I'm confused. Why would there have been American FBI in the PI to begin with? FBI handles domestic stuff, right? CIA handles stuff not on American soil, right? I'm not all that knowledgeable about these things and may be totally wrong ... someone can clarify this?
